“Yes, well. Maybe it’s time you taught him a lesson he’ll never forget. Sure seems that he has forgotten all the others,” the first scoffs.

“If he didn’t have intel that we need, he’d already be dead. Traitorous cunt.”

“Noooooo,” I wake up screaming.

My body is covered in a layer of cold sweat and I’m trembling from head to toe.

“Mav?” I cry. “Mav, please?”

I try to move, but something stops me. Something I didn’t notice the last time I came too.

But then, my body was so weak and my head so fuzzy, I couldn’t grasp anything.

Pushing my feet against something, I try to move it out of the way, but I can’t.

I do the same with my hands, but all I find are bars that my fingers wrap around.

I pull and push, but nothing happens.

I’m trapped.

Oh God.

“MAV?” I scream, frantically trying to shift around, to break free from whatever it is. But I can’t. “MAV?”

At first, his response is quiet, but it doesn’t matter. I hear his rumbling voice loud and clear in my ears, and that’s all I need to squash some of the panic.

“I’m here, Doll. I’m right here.”

I blink against the darkness, desperate to see him, desperate to wake up from this nightmare.

But it’s not a nightmare. I’m not asleep right now.

“I’m… I’m trapped.”

“I know,” he forces out. The crack in his voice rips through my chest like a chainsaw.

“W-what’s wrong?” Where are we?”

“I’m okay,” he lies. “And I don’t know.”

I swallow thickly, racking my brain for a memory.

We were in the ocean, laughing, making lov—

A bang rips through the air and it dislodges something in my brain.

The door. The knock.

Mav going to answer it.

The sound of a single gunshot.

Victor Harris.

“Oh my God,” I whimper, my eyes instantly flooding with red-hot tears that cascade down my cheeks.

“Shush, babe. You need to try and stay calm, okay.” Mav’s voice is stronger this time, and thankfully, I’m able to latch onto it like I have so many times before.
