I have to believe that they’ll come for us.

If Reid knew we left, if he was part of planning what I thought was our big escape, then he cares enough to come and rescue us… right?

A loud bang somewhere beyond the darkness rattles the floor beneath me, sending a rush of ice down my spine.

“Mav?” I whisper.

“Right here, Doll. Right here.” He groans, sounding even worse than he did before.

There’s another clank and then a rattle and only a second later, the room is flooding with blinding light.

My eyelids slam closed as I fight to adjust and heat almost instantly warms my body. It’s not the sun, it’s not that good, but it’s such a relief after being so cold that I almost begin sobbing again.

But my tears are wiped away when I sense their presence.

Every hair on my body lifts and my skin prickles in a way I unfortunately remember all too well.

“Well, well, well look at that,” Victor taunts. “Exactly where we left them.”

Heavy footsteps move closer to us and fear makes me curl in on myself.

I might be in a cage—or at least assume that I am—but that won’t stop them from hurting me. Nothing other than my death will stop them from hurting me.

Not wanting to be at a disadvantage, unable to see them, I risk cracking my eyes open.

The light is almost blinding, making my eyes stream with tears the second even a tiny bit gets in.

But any chance of taking this slow, of trying to lessen the pain, is ripped away when Mav suddenly cries out a second after the sound of what I can only describe as a whip cracks through the air.

My eyes fly open and the true reality of what we’ve managed to land ourselves in becomes clear.

My blood chills and my stomach bottoms out.

“No,” I scream. “Mav. No, please don’t hurt him,” I beg, watching in horror as they do just that.

“Keep screaming, princess. And you’ll be up there next,” Victor warns as Razor continues.

“Oh no, we’ve got something so much better in mind for you, don’t we, Vic?” my father taunts, darkly.

“Please, just let us go.”

Dad laughs. Actually throws his head back and belts out a laugh.

“Ah, Alana. You never were the smartest, were you?”

REID

“You sure you don’t want to come?” Devin asks, lingering in the doorway that Ezra and Ellis just walked through.

“I’m not leaving him,” I say, despite the fact that I’m fucking desperate to follow them and try and figure out what the fuck is going on.

I need to trust them to go and do this for me. They’re more than capable of scoping out the place Mav and Alana ran to and looking for clues about where they went.

“Okay. We’ll call you if we find anything,” Dev promises.

“Thanks.” He ducks out of the door, but I quickly call him back. “Be careful, yeah? They might have left—”
