“It doesn’t matter because I never would have let you go.”

And with that truth lingering around us, the lights go out, plummeting us into darkness once again.

“I love you,” she whispers. The words hit me with the strength of one of Dad’s strikes.

“I love you too, Doll. Stay strong for me, yeah. No matter what happens next. I need you to be strong.”

“Don’t talk like that,” she warns weakly. “We’re going to walk out of this together. Just like we always planned.”

“What do you mean you don’t know?” Reid growls in his scariest gangster voice.

Unfortunately for him, the person on the other end of the phone doesn’t seem overly concerned by it.

“That isn’t good enough. I need that intel, Aubs.”

Aubs?

My brows pull together as I try to place that name.

But fuck, it’s hard.

I might be hearing the words Reid is saying, but they just rattle around my head, the meaning of them not registering in my fuzzy brain.

Where am I?

“You need to get back there and find out more.”

There’s a voice on the other end of the line. A much softer voice that confuses me even more.

Surely he’s not barking orders at a woman.

We don’t work with women.

Not because we’re sexist. Totally the fucking opposite. Women are fucking great at everything they set their mind to. And I’ve no reason to believe they also wouldn’t be kickass gangsters if they so desired.

Victor is the old-fashioned cunt who thinks women’s roles need to be very different to the men’s.

I’m sure Alana would be fucking epic walking into meetings with this state’s scariest motherfuckers and wrapping them around her little finger.

Pain like I haven’t felt in a very long time slices straight through my chest as I think of her.

Fuck.

Lifting my hand in the hope of rubbing away the pain, something pinches my skin.

“What the—”

“Shit. JD. I gotta go,” Reid says in a rush before whatever I’m lying on dips beside me. A bed, I guess.

“J?” he asks, sounding a hell of a lot softer and more concerned than he did on the phone only seconds ago. “J? Are you awake?”

It’s not the first time I’ve heard his voice recently. But it’s the first time I’ve managed to hear more than a handful of random words.

Not that it mattered, while my body was immobile and my head felt like it was stuffed full of cotton, I knew he was here. Even when he was angry and shouting. He was here. Wherever here is.
