“My books are not trashy, thank you very much. They are very stimulating literature.”

“Stimulating, sure.” I laugh.

“Joke all you like, but if you were to read one, you might learn a thing or two about how to win this woman over, because it seems to me that she’s got you all twisted up in knots right now. She giving you the runaround? Poor baby Harris,” she coos as if she’s talking to an actual baby. “I bet it isn’t very often that people say no to you, is it?”

“Remind me why you’re here again?” I deadpan.

“Because, apparently, I’m one of those who can’t say no to you,” she confesses.

“You’re not exactly getting me results though, are you?” I scoff.

“Oh, tone it down. It’s been a couple of days. You always knew getting answers out of that stone would take a while.”

“Well, you need to up the ante. Things are progressing faster than I anticipated and I need to know what he’s thinking.”

“I'll get you what you need, don’t you worry about that.”

“Good,” I state before pulling my cell from my pocket and checking the time. “I need to go. And you need your beauty sleep.”

“What are you trying to say?” She faux gasps.

“You’ve got a corrupt son of a bitch to manipulate, you need to be in top form,” I say, abandoning my glass on the coffee table and pushing to my feet.

“I’ve got this,” she assures me, following me to the door of her suite. “I’ll be in touch,” she promises. “And if you need any tips where your girl is concerned, you know where I am.”

“I’m good, but thanks.”

“Oh, I’m sure you are.” She winks.

“Why did I come here?” I ask.

“Because you love my charm and delicate touch.”

“Delicate, my ass. Watch your back, yeah?” I say before taking off down the hallway.

“You don’t need to worry about me, Harris,” she retorts. “The devil wants me in hell just as much as he wants you.”

I’m still shaking my head as I step into the elevator to leave.

In another life, Aubrey could probably be my perfect woman. She’s got as much blood on her hands—if not more—than I have, and I know that I’d never shock her with any of the shit I’m involved in.

But my life is never that easy.

* * *

The house is steeped in darkness when I step inside. Not that I’m surprised, it’s almost two in the morning.

Aubrey’s hotel might be out of town, but I took a detour in the hope of clearing my head.

But every time I try, all I can see is my father holding his hand out and placing that hair tie with strands of Alana’s blonde locks into my palm and my heart plummets all over again.

There’s a chance he doesn’t know. Of course there is. It could have been anyone’s.

But my father knows me better than I’d like him to. He sees things. More than others. And I know he’s suspicious as fuck right now.

He didn’t say anything, didn’t give any kind of hint that he knew, but deep down, I know he does.

And what’s even more terrifying is that I’ve no idea what he’s going to do about it.
