Tell him, a little voice begs as I watch JD suffer.

But despite knowing that he needs the truth, the thought of the pain it’ll cause him.

Her leaving is one thing, but knowing that Victor has her.

Fuck.

Lifting my hand, I rub the back of my neck as I try to figure out the best thing to do here.

It’s going to fucking rip him apart if he knows she is at the mercy of him, Kurt, and Razor once again.

He’ll be out of that bed and then the house before I’m able to stop him and end up doing something really stupid.

“I think I love her,” he confesses, making the ache in my chest intensify.

“I know, man,” I say softly.

“And she’s gone. With her husband.”

My lips part, but he beats me to it.

“I knew she’d choose him. I just didn’t think she’d leave like that. I thought I meant at least something to her.”

“You did.”

He blows out a pained breath.

“It doesn’t matter now though, does it? They’ve gone off together to embark on the future they always should have had. I gave him the push he needed, and now she’s going to get everything she’s ever wanted from the man she loves.”

A sad smile pulls at his lips.

“I’m happy for her. For them, I really am.”

He falls silent and I continue to fail to fill the void.

Eventually, he turns his eyes back on me.

“Did you tell me that you went to Mexico to meet Luciana?” he asks with a deep frown, as if he doesn’t believe the words that are passing his lips.

“Yeah, I did.”

He nods, seemingly happy that he’s not imagining things.

“What happened? Did she give you anything useful?”

I give him a quick rundown of my meeting with the formidable Luciana Rivera before turning my attention to the thumb drive I left with.

“Ellis has been working his way through the files. But we have names and locations to dig further into.”

JD’s eyes light up for the first time since he came to.

“You think you might find Kristie?”

“Maybe,” I say, although my voice doesn’t hold much hope. I think he knows as well as I do that the chances of finding Alana’s sister now is slim to none. If she is alive then she could be anywhere in the world. From what Ellis has found, this stretches far wider than just our little corrupt town.

It’s huge. And if we handle this right, we’re on the verge of uncovering something massive. The number of lives we could save by blowing this to pieces is beyond belief.

Just thinking about it makes my head spin.
