Unease ripples through the car as we speed through the city.

We may have got through the club’s security, but it was only just. They had their system locked down so tight it was almost unhackable.

When they discover that we not only got in, but we also managed to access the building and take one of their girls, they’re going to be out for blood.

As far as we know, we didn’t leave any trace that it was us. All we can do is hope it stays that way because the last thing we need is more corrupt motherfuckers gunning for us.

Reid’s eyes stay locked on Alana as the car bounces over potholes and takes corners a little too fast.

His concern for her is palpable. And the way he watches her tells me exactly how much he cares.

He might not be overly vocal about his feelings for her, or as tactile as me and JD, but it’s there in his dark eyes and the way his fists are curled on his lap.

He’d die for her.

And that alone ensures that everything I used to feel about him has been shattered to smithereens.

Kristie doesn’t so much as fidget or whimper the whole journey back to the hotel, and she’s still completely out of it as Reid lifts her from JD and Alana’s laps and carries her out of the car.

“Wait,” Alana cries the second her sister disappears from her sight.

“It’s okay, Dove. He’s just taking her inside,” JD assures her, but it doesn’t stop her from racing after them.

He pushes forward, but before he stands, he looks back at me. He doesn’t need to say any words, I can read what he wants to say in his worried eyes.

This is really bad, isn’t it?

I blow out a slow breath before following him out of the car and marching into the back entrance to the hotel.

In only seconds, the elevator is ascending toward the top of the building, where we’ll be safe for a least a few days while we figure out what the fuck we’re meant to do next.

“Who exactly owns this place?” JD asks as we climb higher and higher.

“You don’t need to worry about that,” Aubrey responds, finally looking up from her cell.

“We’re safe though, right?” Alana asks, her voice rough with emotion.

“Yes. Kingston Callahan will make sure nothing happens to any of us.”

“He some kind of Chicago gangster?” I ask.

“No. Worse.” My brows pinch. “Him and his family own most of this city. Their businesses are mostly legit. But they have contacts in places even we don’t.”

Reid scoffs at that.

Aubrey rolls her eyes. “Oh, I’m sorry, were you the one who secured all of this for us?”

Reid’s lips pull into a smile before his expression turns more serious.

“We’re grateful, Aubs,” he says quietly.

She smiles at him, obviously loving the praise, but it’s not long before she returns to her usual sassy self.

“Good. You should be,” she teases before the lift dings, announcing our arrival, and we all stand back to allow Reid to march into the penthouse with Kristie still in his arms.

Twisting out of JD’s arms, Alana rushes out after them, leaving me, JD, and Aubrey behind.

“He’s right, we really do appreciate it,” I say sincerely.
