“She’s safe now, Pet. We’re not going to let anyone touch her again,” Reid assures her.

I’m sure on some level, his words help, but they don’t stop her uncontrollable sobs. If anything, she only gets louder.

I feel useless. Completely and utterly useless as she continues to cry, and when I look up from her tearstained cheeks, I find similar expressions on Reid and JD’s faces.

All any of us want to do is give Alana everything she deserves, yet around every corner, there seems to be something to ruin all the good we’re trying to give her.

We sit there, a silent support, an impenetrable barrier between them and the painful, ugly outside world until Aubrey’s voice floats through the air, letting us know that her doctor has arrived.

My eyes collide with Reid’s as we back off the bed to allow them to look at Kristie. But while our conversation might be silent, JD’s isn’t.

“Are we trusting this one after the last fuck-up?”

Reid glares pure death at his best friend as Alana lifts her head from the pillow.

“I don’t give a fuck if he’s the most untrustworthy cunt on the planet. Let him treat her, and then put a bullet through his head. Just… just make sure she’s okay first.”

She sits up and wipes her cheeks with the backs of her hands.

JD, who’s still sitting on the bed, wraps both his arms around her.

My muscles burn to be the one holding her, attempting to keep her together. Gritting my teeth, I remind myself that I agreed to this situation. I agreed to share my wife with these two assholes.

“We promise. If we’re at all suspicious of this fucker then he’ll be worm food the second he’s done his job.”

She nods, still sniffling and holding Kristie’s hand.

JD releases her when a soft knock sounds out on the closed bedroom door, leaving the two of them in the middle of the bed.

We all look at the door, waiting to judge the doctor on first sight, and the second the door opens and someone appears, they do a double take at the glares directed their way.

“Guys, stand down,” Aubrey says. “I can personally vouch for this one,” she says, stepping up behind the blonde lady that’s still hovering in the doorway.”

“You vouched for the last one,” Reid reminds her darkly.

“Ah, no. Jude was a colleague. A good one, but our relationship was limited to work.”

“Sure it was,” JD mumbles.

“Fuck off, Julian,” she snaps. “Sienna is the best. There will be no need to put a bullet throughherhead once she’s treated the patient.”

Aubrey glances at Alana, after letting us all know that she was listening to every word we were saying in here.

The three of us step back as Sienna stalks into the room, mostly looking unfazed by our presence.

I’ve no idea who she is or what her job really entails, but she seems confident in this bizarre situation.

“Okay, so this is Kristie, right?” she asks, setting her bag on the end of the bed and unzipping it.

“Yeah,” Alana agrees. “She’s e-eighteen,” she stutters, desperately trying to hold herself together. Taking a calming deep breath, she continues, “I pulled a needle from her arm when I found her. Heroine, I assume.”

ALANA

The doctor, Sienna, glances over her shoulder after pulling on a pair of gloves.

“Could you all give us some space, please?” she asks, firmly making my heart drop to my feet.
