“Dove,” JD warns. “Reid is right. You’re not?—”

“Telling me what I can and can’t do, remember?” she states. “We’re a fucking team. We do this together.” She stares each of us dead in the eyes. “She’s just a kid. We can’t let her?—”

“Who’s just a kid?” a weak, scratchy voice adds from behind Alana.

“Kristie,” Alana gasps, rushing over to her sister.

“Who’s just a kid?” she asks again when none of us offer up any information.

“It’s nothing you need to worry about,” Alana tries.

“Bullshit,” she mutters. “If it’s to do withhimthen it’s everything we need to worry about.”

She doesn’t explain whohimis, but it doesn’t take a fucking rocket scientist.

There’s only one man who’s fucked up both their lives.

The exact same one who is fucking up Daisy’s as we speak.

“Reid, can you get us back? Today? Now?” Alana asks, no, pleads.

“We can’t just go back on his demand. If he knows we’re out of town, then he could be waiting and?—”

“I know. I’m not stupid,” Alana snaps. “But we can’t leave them with him. With them. She’s three, Reid. A baby.”

I blow out a long breath and get to my feet.

I march right up to Alana where she’s standing beside the chair she helped Kristie into.

“We’ll get them,” I promise her. “I swore to Ivy that I’d never let anyone hurt Daisy, and I stand by that.”

Alana’s bottom lip trembles as she thinks about that sweet little girl.

“Nothing is going to happen to Daisy. We’ll find a way.”

As I speak, Reid barks instructions into his phone. Kristie stares up at us, waiting for an explanation that none of us are willing to give while JD paces, also trying to make sense of everything.

“Two hours,” Reid suddenly barks. “We’re scheduled to be in the air in two hours.”

Alana deflates in relief in my arms.

“Thank you. And whatever he wants. We’re going to do. I don't care if?—”

“One step at a time, Doll.”

“I’ll do it. Whatever it is. If it rescues a child,” Kristie offers.

“Absolutely not,” Alana spits. “This is not your fight.”

“Like hell it’s not.” The sisters glare at each other, but neither is willing to break.

“Can we discuss this once we’re on the airplane, maybe?” JD suggests.

“Fine,” Alana agrees, “but by the time the sun sets, Daisy is going to be safe with Mav. No matter the consequences.”

Reid glances at me before JD does the same.

I swear they can see my heart rip in two.
