My breath catches. “Reid’s mom?” I ask.

“Yeah. Feisty little thing she was. Caused me nothing but trouble.”

“What happened?”

“He hasn’t told you?”

“Not really.”

“Dad stupidly agreed to entangle her in some bullshit gang deal he was working on.”

“Shit,” I breathe.

“Yeah. Reid’s grandfather was a twisted fuck just like his dad. She was collateral. So when the deal went south, she was shipped here and forced into a marriage she had no interest in with a man she hated even more than our father.”

“Victor.”

“Bingo, baby.” If he was hoping for that to come out lightly then he failed by a mile. His voice is filled with nothing but pain and heartache.

“Just like you with Kristie. She was there one day, and then gone the next. Took me years to discover where she went. But by then it was too late. She had a life here, a family. Children. My nephews.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I just wish there was something I could have done. But if I got involved, I would have caused her more issues than she already had, and the inevitable might have happened sooner. I couldn’t leave those boys without a caring parent sooner than necessary.”

“What happened to her?”

“Victor killed her,” he says, his voice hard and cold.

I nod. Of fucking course he did.

“Things got more serious with Hannah and she became a nuisance. I don’t know the details. Probably never will.”

“You’re a good uncle,” I say. “Reid really looks up to you.”

“He's a good kid. Mostly.” He laughs. “They all are. Well, minus Gray. That boy is fucked up beyond belief.”

I think of the youngest Harris brother. Hannah’s only child.

“I don’t know him,” I confess. All I know is what Mav’s told me and honestly, none of it has been good.

“Probably for the best. Little fucking psychopath.”

“Probably fits right in around here then.”

“I think Victor knew that he’d never mold Reid, or the others, to be the little bitches he wanted. Grayson though. He was born with a screw missing from what I’ve heard.”

“Where is he?” I ask, aware that he hasn’t been around for a while. Well, ever since he tried to abduct Kane Legend’s little brother’s girlfriend. Fucking moron.

Griff chuckles before looking back at Brody, who’s trailing behind us.

“Now that would be telling, wouldn’t it?”

“So you know,” I surmise.

“Inquisitive little thing, aren’t you?” he teases. “No wonder my nephew is so enthralled with you.” Before I get a chance to respond, he pulls to a stop. “Ladies first,” he offers, gesturing to the old battered staircase that doesn’t look like it’ll hold my weight, let alone theirs.

But I guess there’s only one way to find out.
