“So, there you go. Give Victor what he wants and then you’ll get yours.”

“Assuming you did enough work to turn that twisted son of a bitch.”

The fact they’re doubting me pisses me the fuck off. But I get it.

I really fucking get it.

“Let’s see what tomorrow brings, yeah?” I mutter, throwing back another measure.

I march from the room, leaving them with no doubt exactly how that comment landed.

“Reid, Bro. We didn’t mean…”

A smirk curls at my lips as I take the stairs two at a time.

They really need to stop underestimating me.

Voices float down the hallway and I slow to a stop at the door to Mav’s room.

Inside, I find JD and Ezra keeping watch over a sleeping Daisy.

The sight gives me pause. But also, I’m not surprised.

I’m about to say something when Mav appears from the bathroom, fresh from the shower.

“She okay?” he asks, his eyes never straying from her sleeping form.

“Sleeping like a baby,” Ezra assures him.

“Fuck,” he breathes, his ass resting back against the chest of drawers. “How the fuck are we meant to do this?” I think he’s asking himself more than he is anyone else, but that doesn’t stop me from finally walking into the room and giving him an answer.

“We’ll figure it out,” I announce, turning all eyes on me.

Ignoring JD and Ez, I focus on Mav, walking up to him and wrapping my hand around the back of his neck, in a move that I hope is somewhat supportive.

“We’ve got you, man,” I say, staring into his haunted eyes.

His eyelids lower, cutting our connection.

“I can’t ask you to do this,” he says so quietly that only I can hear.

“It’s a good thing you don’t have to then, huh?”

A few beats of silence pass as I wait for him to respond, but he can’t find the words.

“We stopped by Sheila’s trailer and got her some stuff,” Ezra explains. “She doesn’t have a lot though, Bro.”

“We’ll make sure she has everything she needs.”

I take in the concern on both his and JD’s faces before looking at the little girl in the middle of the bed again.

“Just look after her, yeah. We’ve got the rest,” I say to Mav before walking out of the room in favor of mine.

The second I step inside, my entire body sags.

I all but stumble to the window and rest my palms against the sill as I stare out at the town before me.

Harrow Creek.
