“Getting Razor was one thing, but now we have Kurt too. I dunno, I guess reality has hit or some shit.”

He looks away from me, staring at the carpet beneath us.

“Hey,” I say, reaching out, cupping his cheek and dragging his face back to mine. “There’s no shame in feeling apprehensive for what’s to come.”

“No, I know. I just… everything just feels… I don’t know. More now, I guess.

“It’s no longer just me and J taking on Victor and his sidekicks. There’s you, and Mav, and Kristie and?—”

“You’re not fighting for us though; you’re fighting with us. We’re with you all the way here,” I assure him.

“I know. I’ve just…” He blows out a long breath, unable to finish that sentence.

“We’re going to do this,” I tell him, my voice strong and certain. “And you’re going to be the best leader this town has ever seen.”

“What if I’m not?”

“Reid.” I sigh. “That’s just not possible. Look at what the men have done who’ve come before you. And anyway, you can rest assured that if you do anything stupid, we’ll tell you.”

A laugh spills from his lips.

“Yeah, I guess I can always rely on that.”

“This isn’t all on you. Yes, you might be the head honcho, but we’ll always be here.”

Mimicking my stance, he slides his hand along my jaw, pulling me close before backing me up against the window he was gazing out of.

His hand wraps around the back of my neck, tilting my head exactly as he wants it.

His eyes search mine, I’ve no idea what he’s looking for, but he seems to relax.

“You did so good tonight, Pet. Your aim was impressive.”

“Why thank you,” I tease. “I’m glad I could impress you.”

“You impress me every fucking day,” he confesses, making pride swell in my chest.

As a kid, all I wanted was for someone to tell me that they were proud of me, that I was doing something good.

I guess in the end that’s why I ended up loving pain the way I have. When it hurt, when men were taking whatever they wanted from me, that’s when I knew I was doing a good job.

I shake my head at my own thoughts.

“What?” Reid asks, closing the space between us until our noses are almost touching and his warm breath rushes down my neck.

“Nothing. Just… losing myself in memories of times gone by.”

“I wish I could wipe them all from your mind, Pet.”

“How about you just give me new ones to think about instead?”

A deep groan rumbles in his throat.

“Now that’s something I can do.”

A shriek rips from my lips as he suddenly lifts me from the floor and wraps my legs around his waist.

His lips crash down on mine and he sets about giving me something good to remember.
