A sob rips from my throat at his confession.

“What did I do to deserve you?” I ask weakly.

“Doll,” he whispers, pulling me into his arms and pressing his lips to the top of my hair. “I’d give my life to protect you, you know that.”

“I love you,” I whisper into his neck.

“I love you too. More than you could ever know.”

Happy that he’s clean, I reach behind his back and turn the water off before finally releasing him in favor of grabbing us towels.

“Come lie with me?” he asks after allowing me to dry his wounds.

“I wouldn’t be anywhere else,” I say, following him and slipping under the sheets.

I don’t care what time it is. After the day we’ve had, crawling into bed seems like the only sensible thing to do.

“How long are you going to punish Reid and JD for?” Mav asks, his eyes already drooping with his need for sleep.

I think for a moment. “Not sure. I guess it depends on how good at groveling they are.”

“Reid Harris grovel? Yeah, good luck with that, Doll,” he mutters sleepily.

“Oh, I don’t know. I think I could give him a good reason to get on his knees.”

Mav chuckles.

“Reid Harris finally brought to his knees… I should have known that if anyone could do it then it would be you, Doll. Just make sure you don’t wear yourself out. We’ve got so much time to make up for.”

He pulls me tighter into his body, locking his arm around me as if he’s afraid I’ll escape the second he passes out.

“Don’t worry, babe. We’re going to make it up and then some.”

“Good,” he mumbles before his breathing evens out, and he drifts off.

Sadly, I don’t relax so easily.

Every time I close my eyes for longer than a second, all I see is that fire and the fear I felt watching it comes back.

Mav might be right. We might all be here and safe.

But for how long?

Victor isn’t going to believe we’re all dead for long.

And the second he figures out that we’ve given him the slip, he will be back with a vengeance.

Unless we get to him first…

REID

Aubrey and Griff’s eyes burn into me as I throw some clothes at my uncle and then pull some of my own on.

“Can you both just stop,” I bark.

“What? We didn’t say anything,” Griff mutters, holding his hands up in surrender.
