“Yeah,” he agrees. “I trust him too.”

A weird kind of laugh spills from his lips.

“Fuck. Is this the fucking Twilight Zone or something?”

“Fuck knows, man. Whatever it is, I never want to leave. Things might be a bit fucked-up, but life is good.”

He nods again.

“Yeah, things are pretty awesome right now.”

“Fancy heading back down to enjoy some of the awesome?”

“You got it,” he agrees, walking toward the door.

Hopping up behind him, I follow him down the stairs.

I’m feeling good about myself for giving him someone to vent to until he looks over his shoulder and says, “How are those blue balls holding up?”

“And I was being fucking nice to you.” I scoff.

He barks out a laugh, and he’s still grinning smugly as he walks into the kitchen.

“Hey,” Alana says, studying him closely. “You doing okay?”

“Yeah, babe. I’m good.”

“Reid’s making fajitas. You hungry?”

“Starving,” he agrees, pulling out a stool at the island and pouring himself another shot of whiskey.

“We did good tonight,” Alana announces. “Can we now push it all aside for a couple of hours and just be?” she asks hopefully.

“What did you have in mind, little dove?”

"I just want to be normal.”

Reid snorts from his position in front of the stove.

“Okay, not normal. Us. I just want to be us.”

“You got it, Doll,” Mav agrees.

“JD, get everyone drinks and set the table,” Reid demands.

Lifting my fingers to my head, I salute. “Yes, Boss,” I taunt before doing as I’m told.

Alana is right. We need this.

A night of kicking back and basking in the little bit of success we had tonight before we start again tomorrow.

We’ve still got a lot of work to do. And now that we’ve shown our hands—or our faces—something tells me it’s going to happen pretty quickly.

“There. Stop,” I demand, seeing something in the background of the CCTV we’re currently reviewing.

We’ve been doing this for days.
