“We’re still searching, still digging,” Mav explains.

“At the same location?”

“Yeah. We’ve got…” Reid opens up the window with the paused footage on. “About six hours left.”

“Okay, well what are you waiting for? Hit play. There could be more girls there.”

Moving the mouse, he hits play and we all fall silent, hopeful that we’re going to find more.

* * *

It didn’t take long for that hope I was feeling to wane. Minute after minute passed with no new girls appearing, let alone any that were familiar.

Eventually, my stomach was growling so loudly that Reid insisted on excusing himself to go and rustle us up some lunch, leaving me, JD, and Mav alone to continue.

We’re watching a woman wrap herself around a pole for the millionth time in the past thirty minutes when JD’s cell starts ringing.

I hit pause as he pulls it from his pocket and stares at the number.

“For the love of God, will you just answer it,” Mav complains.

“Is that the same number?” I ask, thinking of all the other unanswered calls and ignored messages he’s received.

“Yep.”

“Don’t you want to know who it is?” I ask.

“Probably a wrong number,” he mutters, continuing to stare at it.

“They’ve called you, Julian. Fucking epic coincidence if it’s a wrong number, don’t you think?”

“Fuck off,” JD scoffs.

“Stop being a pussy then.”

“Fine. Fine. I’ll answer it.”

In a rush, he swipes across the screen and lifts it to his ear. However, he doesn’t say anything right away.

Instead, he waits for two long seconds before saying a gruff, “Hello?”

He waits, as do the two of us before he frowns and pulls it from his ear.

“They hung up.”

“You think your voice scared them off?” Mav asks with a smirk.

“They clearly know who they’re calling, they should have some awareness.”

Mav thinks, his face turning serious all of a sudden. “You always wrapped it, right? This couldn’t be a woman who’s?—”

“Always,” he confirms fiercely. There isn’t even a hint of hesitation in his voice. “I’ve never gone bare before…” His words trail off and he glances over at me.

Guilt knots up my stomach. I haven’t spoken to him about why he never has to worry about getting me pregnant.

Reid knows. But JD has never said anything about it, so I can only assume Reid didn’t share the intel.

“You’ve no worries here,” I say regretfully.
