He kissed her deeply and then trailed kisses down her neck. “My pleasure.”

The feeling of him leaving her body was a whole new type of torture, but as he settled down next to her and pulled her tight against him, she started to relax and melted into him.

“Breakfast is going to be cold.” he chuckled.

Ella nuzzled against his warm skin and laughed. “This is worth eating a cold breakfast.”

Her eyes closed, peace settled in, and at that moment she almost forgot every worry in the world. Pain shot thought her without warning, and Ella stiffened with a scream.

Adam jumped up, wild eyed and worried. “What happened?”

“I don’t know. Everything hurts. It’s hard to move.” She gripped the sheets as tears gathered in her eyes. “Oh god! It hurts. What is happening? I can’t move my legs again.” She watched as Adam looked down at her legs, and a look of horror colored his face. “Adam? What is it? What’s happening?”

He turned to her and shook his head. “I don’t know. Your legs are turning black again, but…but it’s different. There are,” He paused and ran his fingers over her leg, but she couldn’t feel it. “There’s these strange ridges or knots.”

“I can’t move.” She whispered.

“Your legs?”

“No. I can’t move anything.”

Adam moved his hand up her leg. “Ella?”

Dread traveled down her spine. “What is it?”

“The black is spreading.” He pushed on her abdomen and she could see he was pushing with force, and yet she didn’t feel a thing, her stomach didn’t move. She felt a heavy warmth creeping up her chest and neck.

Ella tried to move her head, but it stiffened as soon as she tried, and her wild eyes met Adam’s. “I can’t mo—”

Her voice cut out. She could move, she couldn’t speak, and a terrifying panic set in. She was entombed in her own body. Awake and aware, but utterly helpless.

“Ella!” Adam shouted as he shook her. “Ella, talk to me.”

She flickered a glance to meet his gaze, her eyes were able to move, but it took some effort.

“You can’t talk.” He responded. “I’m going to go get help, I’ll be right back, I promise.”

Adam placed a kiss against her lips, and her heart broke that she couldn’t feel it. She watched as he left the room. Left alone with her thoughts, trapped inside a body that was trying to kill her, and scared that this would be the end of everything, she waited, hoping this wouldn’t be the end.

CHAPTER8

“Ella?I have someone here to see you.”

She gave a groan of approval, since that seemed to be the only sound she could make. She watched as he motioned a man into the room. He stood taller than Adam, which given his tall stature was quite a feat. His dark features accented the board shoulders that filled out the perfectly tailored suit he wore. He rubbed his bald head as he stepped up to the bed. His dark eyes seem to read her like a book. He looked over every inch of her as if searching for something. She was transfixed on him. Something stirred inside her, half fear and half reverie, as if this man demanded worship from anyone he encountered.

Her eyes widened, behind him, she could see so much more, she saw Egypt spread out in its glorious splendor, the pyramids, people dressed in ancient clothes and a statue of the man standing in her room… Internally she gasped, the statue was all too familiar, the man wrapped in mummy wrappings, in his hands he held a crook and a flail, and on his head rested the white crown of upper Egypt.

He bowed in her direction, and she wished she could do the same. Adam made his way to her bed and stroked her hardened skin. “This is Os, he’s an old friend and works with Grace. She’s at the hospital right now, so she sent him over to take a look at you.”

Ella tried to smile, but the stiffness made even smiling impossible, instead she felt her lip twitch and that was going to have to do.

The man, Os, set about examining her from head to toe, poking and prodding in places, not that it mattered since she couldn’t feel a thing. Even when he stabbed a small knife into her thigh and Adam yelled. She wanted to react, but there was no pain, not even a hint of pressure. She felt nothing. And even more odd, the knife didn’t penetrate her skin, instead it’s sharpened tip crumpled at the impact.

The men were talking over Os’s findings, but she spaced out as a voice rose up in her mind. They are hiding their true selves, they are not real, this is all just an illusion.

Ella poised the question to herself,“Are they going to hurt me?”

No, but their medicine can’t save you.
