“Pardon?”

“Osteoderms, that’s what this is.”

“Crocodile scales?” He looked down at Ammet in his lap. “Did she somehow curse my mate?” Osiris smirked but tried to cover it with his hand, and Adam rolled his eyes. “Yes, I said it. She’s my mate, I feel it. My dragon feels it. Smirk all you want. Did Ammet do this?”

Osiris shook his head. “Not crocodile scales. Reptile scales.” He cleared his throat and added. “More accurately… Dragon scales.”

“Dragon?” Adam moved the crocodile-goddess off his lap and stood up. “No. There is no way.”

His friend clasped him on the shoulder and sighed. “That’s not all, buddy. You better sit back down.”

Sitting back down, Adam welcomed Ammet back as Os pulled up another chair. “Listen, she can see us because she’s close to death. The closer to death she gets, the more she can see.” He pointed to a hieroglyphic picture on the wall. “She saw me in Ancient Egypt.”

Adam arched a brow. “How do you know that? Did she tell you?”

“No, she’s dying, I could hear her thoughts. She’s ready to go. Her body is done.”

“But you said she’s a dragon.”

“She’s an orphan, right?” When Adam nodded, Os continued, “Her dragon parents abandoned her, she’s a dragon who never learned how to shift, and it’s going to kill her.”

Adam shook his head. “Shouldn’t she just shift? Like her body should at least know what to do, even if she doesn’t. I mean, Asherah never told me how to shift, it just happened.”

“She didn’t have to tell you. You knew what you were. You believed in it. Ella has spent her entire life living as a human, her dragon has stayed quiet, she’s been protecting Ella because Ella doesn’t know what she is. But the dragon can only stay dormant for so long before its form can’t be contained, and it forces a shift while the body that thinks it is human fights against every attempt.”

Adam wiped his hand over his face as Ammet nuzzled his other hand. “So, what do I have to do?”

“Convince her of what she is and get her to embrace the shift. If not, she’s going to die in a horrific amount of pain as her dragon body rips her human body to shreds and without the human, the dragon dies as well.”

Adam stood and patted the croc on the head. “She’s never going to believe me. What sane person would ever believe all of this?”

“Well, you have one thing in your favor. She can see most of us. She knows deep down there’s more to the world than what she has known about. But if you’re going to save her, you need to do it soon. She will shift at sunset.” Os paused. “That’s not all, she has a deep connection to Egypt, that necklace she wears was a symbol of dragons in the service of Isis.

Adam’s mouth fell open. “Then why didn’t Isis say something about it?”

Os shrugged. “You know she doesn’t like to interfere. Besides, she probably just assumed we’d be smart enough to figure it out on our own.”

CHAPTER10

“What doyou mean she’s gone?” Adam roared.

Melody stayed cool under pressure as usual, which boiled his blood even more. “Look, this is what she wanted.”

“I don’t give a shit what she thinks she wants. Where the hell did my mate go?”

“She said she wanted to finish her plan. She wanted to die alone so that no one she cared about had to see her suffer.” Melody held up her hands. “Look, I tried to convince her to stay, but who are we to dictate how a person chooses to die? That’s cruel to take that decision out of her hands.”

“Cruel?” Adam narrowed his eyes and advanced on the demoness. His hand shot out and grabbed her by the throat, heavy claws dug into her flesh as his hand transformed into a black scaled dragon’s paw. “Cruelty will be what I visit upon anyone who keeps me from her.”

“Adam!” A new voice shouted, and Adam whipped around to see his daughter-in-law Lily standing in the doorway. “What the hell are you doing?”

Shame flooded him, and he released Mel, taking a deep breath he rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m sorry, but I need to find her.”

Melody held her hand to her throat and shrugged. “No harm, no foul, boss…but she didn’t say where she was going.”

Lily stepped forward. “Who are we talking about?”

“Ella.” Adam growled. “She left, said she wanted to die alone.”
