“But I don’t know the owner.”

The bell rang and Adam smiled. “You do now.”

Each table was the same. He’d listen, offer a bit of advice or insight, and move on, making sure to give the woman the amount of attention that each deserved to make sure they didn’t leave at the end of the night feeling like they didn’t have a good experience.

By the time he was within one table length away from Ella his dragon grew restless, wanting nothing more to do with pleasantries, the beast wanted Ella and nothing else. Adam fought the beast down, reminding him who was in control, but a part of him wondered how long he could stay in control.

His dragon had never acted this way, thousands of years of calm, letting the beast out when he grew restless, letting him fly, but they’ve always been in sync. Now, Adam wasn’t sure if his dragon would behave long enough to get out the door without taking over and shifting in front of a cafe full of humans. When the bell finally rang, the beast calmed as Adam made his way to Ella’s table.

He sat across from her, and her smile engulfed him. “How did the night go?”

She laughed and shook her head. “Everyone was very nice, but I don’t think anyone was interested in going on a date with someone who’s dying.”

“Then they’re short-sighted. I think you’re brilliant.”

Ella laughed, a full-throated genuine laugh, and Adam wanted to capture the sound for all eternity. “Thank you.” She tapped the tabletop. “So, are you serious about a helicopter tour?”

“Absolutely.” He paused. “If you still want to see the City of Angels from the heavens.”

Her round cheeks blushed, sending heat coursing through his body. Damn, she was stunning. “I do… You have quite the way of describing it, maybe you should be a tour guide.”

“Well, I did just quit one of my side jobs. I could always take up tour guide as my next occupation.”

She quirked a brow. “What was the job you had before?”

Adam laughed and waved his hand around the cafe. “Here, actually.”

Ella almost looked like she was going to spit out her drink. “Here?” she coughed and pounded her fist to her chest to stem off the coughing. “You worked here?”

“Yep.” He lulled his head back for a bit and then met her eyes. “My ex-wife owns the place with her best friend, and I thought I’d try my hand at the service industry.” Giving her a wink, he added. “I wasn’t very good at it.”

“Wow, you worked for your ex-wife. I don’t think most men would be able to do that.”

“I guess we just are better off as friends than we ever were as a couple.”

“That’s good. It’s nice to hear that about people.”

Cat waved in Adam’s direction, and he arched a brow. “What’s up, Cat?”

“Closing time, sorry.” She called back. “Don’t want Eve to think we’re slacking up here.”

He nodded. “Gotcha, we’ll clear out.” He stood and held out his hand. “May I escort you back to your hotel?”

Ella rubbed her hands on her pants and let out a soft sigh. “You don’t have to.”

“I know.” Adam leaned down, his lips just a fraction of an inch from her earlobe and whispered, “I would like to, if it is okay with you?”

She took his hand and rose up, letting him get a good look at her beautiful curves and the tight black pants that hugged every inch of her. His mouth watered, his dragon bristled, and he knew without a doubt she was meant for him. Mind, body, and soul.

As they stepped out into the brisk LA night, Ella tilted her head and asked. “Wait, your ex-wife is named Eve?”

Adam felt his stomach knot, he knew exactly where this was going. “Yep.”

He heard her giggle, her pace keeping up with his as he maneuvered them down the block. “Do you have another ex-wife named Lilith?”

He stopped and very slowly turned to look her in the eyes. Big green orbs stared back at him, and their color reminded him of glittering jewels. “Actually—”

“No, no way.” She laughed and put her hands up. “There’s no way I’m buying that.” He didn’t laugh, and she froze. “You aren’t serious, are you?”
