As the doctor stood up, she handed Ella a business card with a handwritten number on the back. “This is my personal number, call me if you need anything. Now, as a doctor, I’m going to prescribe you lots of rest and fluids tonight. I hear you have a helicopter tour tomorrow, and I’m sure you wouldn’t want to miss it.”

“Thank you, I really appreciate the help.” Ella unhooked her necklace and took off her earrings to settle into bed.

Grace stopped in her tracks and pointed to the necklace. “May I ask what that is on your necklace?”

Ella beamed a smile and picked it up, handing it over to her. “It’s a bronze coin with the goddess Isis on it. I kinda like to think maybe she’s looking out for me now, or will at least put in a good word for me when this is over.”

“Are you Egyptian?”

“I don’t really know. I was adopted and don’t know my birth parents. This was just something left with me when I was found.”

“Interesting, well,” Grace handed back the necklace, “I’m sure the goddess is watching over you.”

Ella settled back against her pillow when something caught her eye. An aura of glowing white surrounded the doctor. As the woman went to leave, Ella cleared her throat. “Doctor Chapman? Did you know you are glowing?”

The woman’s facial expression slipped for one brief second, but she recovered quickly. “I’m glowing?”

“Yeah, there’s a white glow all around you. Are you sure you aren’t my guardian angel?” It was a joke, of course, but something nagged her on the inside. Something was off here. It was something just beneath the surface, but Ella couldn’t put her finger on it.

Grace laughed and gave a mischievous wink. “I am most certainly not an angel.”

The door closed behind her, and Ella was left alone with her thoughts. Maybe the glow was another symptom of her disease? Maybe it was a sign of her dying? Either way she couldn’t fight off the sleep that was pulling her under, and she knew without rest she wouldn’t be able to make it through tomorrow, which was promising to be a great new experience.

CHAPTER3

The phonenext to Ella’s bed rang as soon as she exited the shower. She dove across the bed to reach it before the person hung up. “Hello?”

“Ms. Ramesses, Mr. Primis is waiting for you in the lobby.”

Her stomach burst into butterflies. “Okay, thank you. Can you tell him I’ll be down in just a minute?”

The woman’s voice on the other end soothed Ella’s nerves as she spoke. “I’ll relay the message. I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful day.”

Ella hung up and placed her hand over her heart to feel her heart rate lowering. This was going to be a great day, as long as she didn’t faint again. Then again, fainting was really the least embarrassing of her symptoms. She would randomly break bones, lose her voice, be unable to keep food down, she would go pale and cold then her temperature would spike to unnatural levels and her skin would turn bright red. She could do without any of that happening today as well.

She sprang into action, drying her hair and getting dressed. A cute skirt tempted her from the closet, but if the movies had taught her anything, it was that skirts and helicopters don’t mix well. She opted for a pair of distressed jeans and an off the shoulder teal jewel tone sweater with a pair of knee-high boots to finish it off. Ella grabbed her necklace and fastened it around her neck before grabbing her purse and heading out the door.

The elevator dinged open as soon as she pushed the button, and she stepped inside, giving the attendant a quick hello. Her nerves rushed to her stomach again, and she could only pray she would be able to make it through the day.

The man turned to her, “Which floor, ma’am?”

“Oh, I’m meeting someone in the lobby.”

She swore for a moment she saw his teeth sparkle when he smiled, like they do in toothpaste ads. Shaking her head, she held onto the rails and held her breath as they descended downward, counting the floors as each one passed.

When the elevator gave its little shiver and bob as it reached the ground floor Ella’s eyes rolled back in her head. The attendant was at her side before she knew what was happening. He gripped her elbow and braced his other hand on the small of her back. “Easy there. Are you okay?”

She chuckled, feeling foolish. “Yeah, I always get a little dizzy on that last little shake before the doors open.”

He eyed her suspiciously. “Are you sure you’re okay? I can call a doctor.”

Shaking her head, she finally found some strength in her legs and stood up straighter. “I’m okay, really. I’m not going to miss this day for anything.”

“I’m going to at least escorting you off the lift, ma’am.”

“Okay, but this stays just between us. Promise?”

He nodded and opened the door, taking her arm in his and walking her out of the elevator. They were no more than two-steps out when they ran smack dab into Adam. Her eyes widened. “Adam. Good morning.”
