“They wouldn’t be able to fine you for it.” She snapped a few pictures, turning in a circle as she did so. “And I have a sneaking suspicion this place was dredged to water whatever was on the other side of the fence, outside of your property. That looks like old farmland to me, maybe an old orchard.”

I leaned on the old fence as she walked away, talking to herself as she snapped picture after picture. It was incredible watching her work, like her mind had shifted from that sassy, overprotective mother hen to a scientist in an instant.

She was sharp as a tack, that one.

“Grab my notebook out of the truck,” she commanded without breaking her stride as she crouched to the ground, thumbing a few of the rocks.

“Yes, ma’am.” I laughed, a flicker of warmth spreading in my chest. I wasn’t used to people bossing me around. If they had, I made it clear it would never happen again.

But I sure as hell liked it when she did it.

An hour passed, and she jabbered to me, and to herself, the entire time. She had a fierce work ethic I hadn’t expected, but I was realizing with each passing minute I’d totally underestimated her. By the end of the second hour, the back of my truck was full of rocks she’d pulled out of the dry earth, and her notebook was full of notes.

“I’d like to see the rest of the property if you have time,” she said, climbing into the truck.

“Well, that’s way easier to do on horseback, the road only ropes around this side of the place. We can go get two of the horses—”

“Oh, I—” She paused, her cheeks turning that ruddy color that set my blood on fire again. “I haven’t ridden since I was kid. I wouldn’t remember how.”

“Well,” I said cheerfully, clicking my tongue. “Sounds like a lesson is in order.”

“You’ll give me a horse-riding lesson?”

“Why not?”

“Aren’t I supposed to be doing a job for you?”

“You are.” I chuckled, driving back toward the house. “But part of that job is going to need to be done on horseback if you want to explore the whole property. Sounds like you need a little training.”

She gave me a look, her arms crossed over her chest as we bounced along the dirt road. I stole a glance at her, trying to keep my eyes on her face instead of her breasts, which were damn near bouncing out of her bra.

I bit my lip, finding it safer to keep my eyes forward instead of being tempted to look at the fucking bombshell in the passenger seat of my truck.

“Fine, you can give me a lesson in riding.”

“Only if you think you need it.”

“That’s easy for you to say, being a cowboy and all.”

This time, I did look over at her, watching her blue eyes crease with sudden mischief. I narrowed my eyes on hers, wondering what exactly was going through her mind at the moment.

“You saying you don’t have it in you to be a cowgirl, sweetheart?”

She turned in her seat to face me and replied, her voice dropping an octave, “I’m not a cowgirl, and I’m not your sweetheart.”

It would’ve been a threat had her voice not been dripping with heat.

“We’ll see about that.”

I purposefully sped up the drive to prevent whatever was happening between us from going any further. Moira was like a fucking magnet, and had our suddenly flirtatious banter gone any further, I would’ve had to fight with what little will I had to not scoop her into my lap and see just how much I could make those incredible breasts bounce in that little white tank top.

Now I was thinking of nothing but seeing her on horseback, which was doing nothing to staunch the heat rising in my body, either.

Fuck, I was in trouble.

Even Moira seemed flustered. She’d rolled the window down, the soft breeze whipping at the little waves falling her face. When we finally pulled into the driveway in front of the house, she hopped out without a word and made a break for the front porch.
