I hung up and slid my phone back into my purse, my hands trembling as I tucked them into the pockets of my shorts. Day and Grant were at the park, and all I really needed right now was to see that Day was all right.

I knew in my soul that Grant would do anything to protect Day, but it didn’t stop the overwhelming sense of despair that gripped me as I started walking back through the market, forgoing my plans to pick through the dusty troves of treasure in the antique shops.

I had to tell Grant everything. He needed to know.

Because Kirk wouldn’t just hurt me, especially if he found out I was living with a man.

I picked up the pace, unable to stop myself from imagining every scenario involving Kirk finding us.

I was practically sprinting into the grassy park by the time I set sights on Grant and Day, who were playing in a shaded thicket of trees. Day was in the tree, and Grant was underneath him, his hands outstretched to catch the boy as he jumped.

Grant lowered Day to the ground and met my eyes, raising his hand.

But then his hand curled into a fist, his brow furrowing as I came closer.

My lower lip was trembling, my throat bobbing as I fought the sob threating to break free.

“Moira? What the hell—” Grant started running toward me, Day standing at the base of the tree looking thoroughly confused as Grant caught me, wrapping his arms around me. “What’s the matter? Are you hurt?”

“He got out of prison somehow,” I whispered frantically. “I don’t—I don’t know—He’ll try to find us, I know it.”

Grant’s hand rested on the back of my head as I trembled against his shoulder.

“You need to tell me everything,” he said in a whisper. “From the beginning.”

“I know—”

“Does Day know?”

“He wouldn’t remember,” I choked, looking over his shoulder at Day, who was looking right at us with a concerned expression lining his face. He started walking over as I pushed away from Grant, hastily wiping my eyes. “Some other time.”

Grant nodded and turned away from me right as Day came up to us.

“What’s wrong, Mama?”

“I have a stomachache,” I lied, and hated it. “I think I’m ready to go home.”

“Okay. You can lie on the couch with Jenny. She’ll make you feel better,” Day replied innocently, taking my hand. I fought with all of my strength to stop myself from bursting into tears again.

He had no idea how much danger he was in, and I needed to do everything in my power to keep it that way.

But I wouldn’t be doing it on my own this time.

Grant laid his hand on my shoulder as we walked out of the park. I glanced back at him briefly, noticing how rigid his body was as we walked back to his truck.

“You guys get in, I need to talk to Pete for a minute,” he said, handing me the keys. He touched my cheek, his eyes boring into mine before he leaned in and brushed a soft kiss over my lips.

Right in front of Day.

I swallowed, watching him walk away before looking down at a shocked Day, who was standing with his hand clutching the handle of the back door of the truck.

“Why’d he kiss you like that?” Day asked, tilting his head, and squinting his eyes against the sun as he looked up at me.

“Because he likes me a lot,” I said, my voice trembling a little. I couldn’t help but smile as Day smiled back.

“You should like him back too, then he can be my dad.”

My eyebrows shot up, and I threw my head back and laughed.
