In fact, the very last thing I ate as a mortal man was an apple.

So when Alice tossed her freshly washed hair over her shoulder and bathed me in the scent of freshly cut apples, it was all I could do not lean close and demand she give me a taste.

I watched as her chest rose and fell under her oversized garment, her breasts shifting with each breath.

Why did she have to be so damned beautiful?

And so off limits?

I couldn’t stop looking.

“Jack?”

I blinked, suddenly transported back to the table in Wonderland. My gaze slid down to my young apprentice.

“What is it?”

“Did you want red or white?” she asked innocently, motioning to the wine glass in her hand.

“Red. I’ll pour it myself.”

Too late. She was already filling the glass with one of the half-dozen bottles scattered around the table.

“Thank you.” I took the glass from her, careful to not let our fingers come into contact.

I knew she was going to be trouble.

I simply hadn’t anticipated how much.

The wine’s deep, rich aroma filled my nostrils, but it paled in comparison to Alice’s scent. I raised my glass, and the others followed suit.

All except for my apprentice, who lifted a glass of sliced lemons dancing in semi-transparent liquid.

Apparently wine wasn’t strong enough for her.

“Here’s to Ransom’s miraculous recovery,” I declared with genuine appreciation. We all clinked our glasses together before taking a drink in his honor. The wine was among the finest in the kingdom, but it would never compare to the blood I had sated myself on earlier.

“Thank you, Jack,” Ransom said between sips of his wine. “Really, it’s good to have you join us.”

Chess grinned even wider. “You should let loose like this more often.”

I hummed in mock amusement as Alice finished gulping her drink and set it down, half empty.

“I don’t know if I could keep pace with you,” I said, eyeing her beverage with disapproval as it refilled itself. “What’s in your glass? Vodka? Gin?”

Alice’s eyes pinned onto mine, and the rhythm of her heartbeat sped up, drumming from her chest directly into my ears.

“It’s water,” she deadpanned. “Some of us have to get up early in the morning.”

Still staring at me, she stabbed a forkful of roast carrots off her plate and slipped them past her soft lips, letting them rest on her pink tongue in such a way that it made my cock take notice and grow jealous. Then she turned her attention back to Ransom and Chess, who were chatting about antidotes for poison.

I was so beside myself that I almost didn’t pick up on the fact that Alice was now suggesting Ransom should work with Queen Amari to build up a surplus of treatments for the poison used by the Red Queen’s army.

Was this the same woman?

Where was the spoiled, self-indulgent brat from only a few days ago? What happened to the confounding, exasperating, lazy little layabout I’d been presented with?

And why did she have to smell so fucking delicious?
