If I wasn’t training, then I was going to eat whatever I felt like. I fully intended to bring my combo carb platter back to my room and eat in angry silence.

That plan went right out the window when I heard the familiar sound of Hatter’s laughter. I looked up just as he, Callister, Ransom and Chess waved me over.

“What’s wrong, bunny?” Ransom crooned. “You look ready to kill someone.”

“Don’t tempt me...”

Ransom glanced at Hatter, then over at me as I collapsed into the empty chair between him and Callister. “What’s this? No training with the White Knight today?”

“Nope,” I scowled. “Jack Ass is refusing to train me until further notice. Apparently he finds me repulsive in my current state.”

The others exchanged confused glances, quickly followed by disbelief.

“But your current state is so lovely,” Hatter reasoned.

Chess shook his head. “Jack would never—“

“He said what?” Ransom snarled.

“He called you repulsive?” Callister growled. The sneer on his tattooed face warmed my heart. If any of my wicked boys was going to go full-on vigilante mode to avenge my honor, it was the very grumpy caterpillar.

“Alice, what exactly did Jack say to you?” Chess patiently asked.

I crossed my arms, indignation burning in my cheeks.

“He said he won’t train me because I’m on my period. He acted like I was diseased or something.”

Understanding dawned on all their faces, although Hatter took a hot second longer than the others.

“He probably doesn’t want to take any risks in harming you,” he said, sounding strangely rational. “After all, his job is to keep you safe.”

“Whatever. I thought his job was to turn me into a lethal weapon.”

“Well...yes...but he alreadyisa lethal weapon, my dear.”

“A woman’s monthly courses wouldn’t be enough to set him off,” Chess reasoned with a thoughtful smile. “It’s not as if Jack is a young vampire in the grip of new bloodlust. He was a vampire for nearly a century before he came to Wonderland.”

Ransom let out a sigh. “He’s still a vampire. The scent of blood has the potential to drive them into a frenzy.”

“But Jack is well fed, and he’s fought on countless battlefields and managed to keep his wits about him,” Chess argued. “It would take a lot more blood than that to pull him into a frenzy.”

I gulped my bottomless mimosa and listened while Chess, Ransom, and Hatter debated the quantity and the quality of blood and bodily tissue needed to trigger a vampire attack. The wicked boys were many things...but squeamish about female biology they were not.

Still fuming, I stabbed into my lunch with unnecessary force, alternating bites of syrupy sweet waffle with hot, salty fries.

Then a fourth voice caught my attention, whispering in my ear below the chatter.

“I know what Jack’s problem is.”

Callister’s declaration was followed by the crackling of a cigarette being lit. A soft cloud of bright green smoke swirled out of his nostrils before curling above his head. Then he caught my gaze while a smug smile spread across his lips.

“Well? What’s his problem?” I finally asked.

“Simple. He wants to fuck you.”

I would’ve laughed in his face, if my mouth wasn’t full. “I’m pretty sure that’s the last thing he wants from me. You should’ve seen the way he looked at me this morning.”

“You think I haven’t noticed the way he looks at you?” Callister asked before taking another puff. Apples. The smoke smelled like green apples. “Have you noticed any tension between you two during your lessons?”
