As he melded back into the darkness, his mind was a whirlwind of memories and emotions. The pain of the past, the rejection of the present, all converging into a single, focused resolve.

The night air was cold and unforgiving, but it was nothing compared to the chill in his heart. He had once sought their acceptance, their understanding. Now, all he sought was closure, a final resolution to the agony they had inflicted upon him.

Midnight would bring an end, one way or another.

CHAPTER THIRTY TWO

Ella hurried to the front door of Trinity Davies’ home, the urgency pulsing through her like a constant drumbeat. She raised her hand and knocked, the sound sharp in the stillness. Moments later, the door creaked open, revealing a woman with auburn hair framing a face etched with lines of a life that hadn’t been kind. Her eyes, wide and questioning, fixed on Ella.

‘Miss Davies?’ Ella asked as she displayed her badge. ‘Are you Trinity Davies?’

The woman peered out of the door, up and down the street, before returning to the stranger at her door. 'Yes, I am. Who are you?'

Ella didn’t waste any time. ‘I’m Agent Dark with the FBI. We have reason to believe your life is in danger. Can I come in?’

Trinity’s face paled, her lips parting in a silent gasp. ‘Danger? What do you mean?’

‘I’ll explain everything, but I need to get inside, out of sight.’

Trinity checked the street again then moved to one side, allowing Ella entry.

As Ella crossed the threshold, she scanned the interior, her senses heightened, her mind cataloging every detail. The home was modest, lived-in, with traces of Trinity's life scattered throughout – photographs on the walls, a teapot on the stove still warm.

Trinity closed the door, her movements tense, her voice barely above a whisper. 'What do you mean, my life is in danger?'

Ella didn’t have time to sugarcoat anything. ‘We believe someone is targeting a group you were a part of. A high school clique. You might have heard about it on the news.’

Trinity shook her head, almost nonchalantly. ‘Sorry, I don’t watch the news. What’s happened?’

‘There’s no time to explain everything. You need to trust me and leave. Now.’ The urgency in Ella’s tone brooked no argument. It was a command, a directive that sliced through the fog of Trinity’s confusion, striking a chord of primal survival.

The woman’s expression flickered with confusion. "Leave? Just like that? I don't understand. Why would someone be after me?"

Ella moved closer, her voice dropping to a low timbre. "Do you remember a boy from high school, someone who was locked in a refrigerator as part of a prank?" She kept the comment passive, not wanting to accuse Trinity of anything.

The question seemed to jolt Trinity, a distant memory surfacing with an uncomfortable clarity. Her gaze drifted away, lost in the past for a moment. "Yes, I remember... it was just a stupid prank. We thought it was funny."

Ella's gaze didn't waver, and this time her words were deliberate and clear. Well, that boy is now a man, and he's seeking retribution. He's already claimed four lives, and we believe he's coming for you next.'

Trinity's hand flew to her mouth, the horror dawning. "Oh my God. But that was years ago! We were just kids!"

Ella's hand gently grasped Trinity's shoulder. ‘Whatever it was, he hasn’t forgotten. You need to leave now, Trinity. Go to the Stamford police department and tell them who you are. They’ll keep you safe.’

Trinity paced back and forth for a moment, as if seeking an anchor in the storm that had just broken into her life. ‘Stamford police. Okay, okay.’ The woman moved with a sudden flurry of action, grabbing her coat and keys.

"Go now. Straight to the police station. Don’t stop for anything."

‘What are you going to do?’ Trinity asked with one hand on the doorknob. ‘Is my house going to be safe?’

"Trinity," Ella said, her voice softening slightly, "I know this is hard and it's happening fast, but you need to trust me. Your life could depend on it. I'll stay here and handle things on this end."

With that, Trinity opened the door and stepped out into the night, her figure quickly swallowed up by the darkness. Ella watched her go, her mind already shifting to the task ahead. She turned, surveying the living room with a predator's focus. The house, once a sanctuary, was now a strategic vantage point, and Ella was the guardian at its gates.

She moved to a position where she could watch the street while remaining unseen, her senses honed and alert.

And now she just had to wait, prepared for the horrors the night might bring.
