“You werelying.I interviewed your assistant Katya. She never said anything—”

“She’d forgotten about the delivery.I’d forgotten. We both had.You know what?Screw this grilling routine.”The white sedan passed.“You never believed me or Lane, anyway.”Lark ran over the crosswalk.

And he kept his perfect pace.

When they got to the lot, he started heading for her car.

She stopped.“No, no, this is it.”

He stilled.

“You walked me to my car. It’s right there.”She used her umbrella to point toward her small SUV.“You’ve done your due diligence.Even as you called me a liar.”

“Sweetheart, we both know you were—”

“Get away from me,” she snapped because it actuallyhurtwhen he called her sweetheart. How dare you?And why does it keep hurting?“Go to your car.I’ll go to mine.Justgo.”

But he didn’t.“I said I was going to help you.I meant it.I will either prove that he’s innocent or I will prove your brother is guilty beyond every possible doubt. One way or another, this is ending.”

His words held such an ominous ring. She turned and double-timed it to her vehicle. Then she heard the thud of his steps behind her.“Don’t even think it!”She had hauled her keys out of her purse.Clenching them in her hand, she lifted her fist so he could see that she had her keys and was ready to go.“Leave me alone right now, Oliver.Do not come even a step closer.”Because he thinks I’m lying.

Of course, he did.He thought her brother was a killer, and he thought she was a liar.

How perfect.

Perfectly heartbreaking.

When will I learn?

She hit the button to unlock her car.Barely pausing, she wrenched open the door and climbed inside.Lark tossed her umbrella into the passenger seat and yanked the cross-body bag over her head.It landed on top of the umbrella. Her breath heaved in and out as she stared blankly at the steering wheel for just a moment.

He hadn’t followed her.

Good.He’d gone to his own vehicle.He had…

I hit the button to unlock my car.Only when she’d done that, the lights hadn’t flashed. She hadn’t heard the littleswishof her locks disengaging the way she normally did. She’d just opened the door, though, without any problem.

Because the locks had already been disengaged?

Her gaze darted to the rearview mirror. She could see Oliver approaching his waiting vehicle, an Audi. She could see him because his headlights just flashed and illuminated the scene.

Mine should have flashed, too.

Even as she had the thought and stared in her rearview mirror—

“Took you forever to get back,” a man’s voice groused. Then a head appeared in her rearview mirror.Dark and shadowy.Covered in a ski mask.

She opened her mouth to scream, but a gloved hand slapped over her lips to muffle the cry.For an instant, her fingers flew up to try and pry those fingers away.

“You’re going to sleep, and when you wake up, you’ll be mine.”A whisper in her ear.

And…

His other hand came up, fast, rushing toward her neck.

She stopped clawing at the glove over her mouth, and, instead, her fingers slammed into her steering wheel. The horn sounded like a desperate cry.She hit it once, twice. Then she twisted in her seat, frantic because she’d just realized that her attacker’s other hand—it held a syringe.

Desperate, terrified, her fingers stretched for her purse.
