She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear.“I…thank you for bringing my clothes over.”

“Theo did it.He was coming by to check in, and I asked him to pick up a few items from your apartment.”

Fabulous. So someone else had gone through her underwear drawer.Like that made her feel super comfortable.

“We’ll be going back to your apartment today and clearing everything else out.You can’t stay there.”He put down the coffee.“I don’t have anything here you’re gonna want to eat.I was waiting for you to get up so we could go out for breakfast.”

Her gaze slid around the kitchen.Landed on a box of cereal. She wasn’t hard to please, and he didn’t need to take her out for a meal.“My favorite,” she murmured.“Mind if I help myself?”

“Take anything you want.”

She could feel his eyes on her as she got down a bowl.Took out a spoon.Poured the milk. She still remembered where everything was.Like they’d never been apart.

Her fingers trembled a little as she carried the bowl of cereal back to the table and sat down.Only to meet his disapproving stare.“There a problem?”she inquired.

“You need more than cereal. You look…hell, beautiful, always beautiful.”

She almost dropped her spoon.

“But I know you’ve lost weight. You seem too fragile.Let me take you out—”

“I’d rather you take me to hunt a killer.”That was on her agenda. Not breakfast.

His lips thinned.

She devoured her cereal because, honestly, she was starving. And eating meant she didn’t have to talk about the big bombshell she’d dropped last night. The one where she’d just casually confessed to killing her father.

My fault. All of it.I tried to tell the cops, but they wouldn’t listen. Then I was sent to the hospital. Her father had fractured her jaw with one of his hits.

And I pulled the trigger.I saw his eyes widen.I swear, for a moment, I saw the madness fade from his eyes, and he just looked…confused.

The spoon clattered into the bowl.

“Lark?”

She stared at her already soggy cereal.“Are you going to arrest me?”Her eyes raised.“Where are those cuffs you love?”

“No one is fucking arresting you,” he growled.“That case was ruled self-defense.And I read through the case file again after you went to bed.”

Of course, he had.She was sure he had a copy of the file on his computer. He used it in his profile.

“You told the responding officers that you’d shot your dad.Your brother also saidhe’dshot him.You didn’t lie, he did.”

“But when I got out of the hospital, I didn’t correct anything.”

“What was the point? You or your brother—same ending.Self-defense.”

She placed the spoon beside the bowl.“I expected a different response from an FBI agent.Aren’t you always supposed to be looking for the truth?”

His eyes glittered.“An FBI agent isn’t talking to you right now.”

Her heartbeat quickened.

“A man who is damn near obsessed with you—he’s the one talking to you. You’re not getting arrested. But I need to know if there are more secrets.I can’t help you if I don’t know the truth.”

“The truth…is that Lane thought he was protecting me.He was afraid I would go to juvie for what I’d done.He tried to take the rap for me, but by doing that, he ruinedhischances.”Her lips pressed together.

“What do you mean?”
