“Her brother killed my Casey!”Nate’s voice cracked.“He killed her, but Lark is standing right there. She’s walking around.Freaking holding hands with you.”

Lark jerked her hand from Oliver’s hold.

“Why does she get to live?”Nate demanded.“But Casey doesn’t?My bride is cold in the ground, and that bitch is out free.”

“I want you to get your hand off my chest, and don’t youevercall her a bitch again.”He got that grief could twist a man into madness.Oh, he more than got it.But Nate wasn’t going to insult Lark while Oliver stood there.“I want you to step the hell back.I want you to—”

“She shouldn’t live! You can’t let her brother go free! You can’t!”Nate yanked his hand back but…

He immediately balled it into a fist. That fist came swinging at Oliver’s jaw in a wild, fast attack.

Was he supposed to just let this prick take a hit?Screw that.Oliver threw up his hand and used his forearm to deflect the blow.

“Boss!”A shout from nearby.

He ignored the shout and plowed his own fist into Nate’s stomach.

A heavyoomphburst from Nate as he staggered back.Oliver followed swiftly and delivered a powerful, second punch. That one is for calling Lark a bitch.Oliver drew back his hand to punch again.

“Freeze!”Jase’s slightly breathless voice ordered. He rushed forward and glared at Nate.“You just attacked a federal agent!”

Technically, a federal agent on abreak. But, semantics.

“Sorry,” Jase muttered to Oliver.“I was across the lobby.Ran over as fast as I could.”

Nate crumpled on the floor.Tears leaked down his face.“Why is Casey in the ground? She’s supposed to be my wife.We were going to have kids.We were going to have a life together.”His body shuddered.“Why is she in the ground?”

Wringing his hands, Kurt crept toward Oliver.“Can wepleasetake this out of my lobby?”

“Why is she in the ground?”

Chapter Nine

“How much have you been drinking?”

Lark rubbed her arms to try and chase the chill from her body. They weren’t in the lobby any longer.Their little group had moved into a small conference room on the hotel’s second floor.Kurt had been too eager to get them out of sight and into a private location.

Nate Quest sat at a table and cradled a cup of steaming coffee in his shaking hands. The coffee had come courtesy of Jase.As for Oliver? He stood and watched his attacker with a cold, dark gaze.

I can’t believe Nate swung a punch at Oliver.

And Oliver hadn’t hesitated to strike back.

“How much?”Oliver pressed.

Nate blinked his bleary eyes.“I don’t…I don’t know.”

“You attacked me.You get that I could press charges against you, right?”

Nate glanced toward Lark—

“Nope.”Oliver immediately stepped into the other man’s line of sight.“I don’t want your eyes on her.Lark was nearly abducted last night. You know anything about that?”

“I…what?”

“Where were you last night?”Rapid-fire.

“Am I…am I being charged with something?Punching you?”
