I’m not going near her. I’m not gonna look at her and when we get ready for bed, I’m sleeping on the blasted pullout couch in the corner of the room.

But my brain scrambles when she comes out, a huge fluffy white robe wrapped around herself. She’s pink and pretty and her long red hair is a tangled mass of wet curls lying on her slim shoulders.

“Your turn,” she says and she looks totally calm. I’m a freaking mess of nerves and she’s just as calm as when we first set out on this trip.

I head in the shower and quickly wash up in ice-cold water. I’m shivering when I get out but my brain is blissfully silent.

Until I get in the other room and she’s lit the fireplace which is crackling in the corner. She’s on the bed and she’s sipping a cup of what smells like hot chocolate, moaning.

“Want some?” She says and I sigh.

“No. I’m good,” I say, my voice clipped.

The shutters rattle on the windows and she shivers, her eyes wide and worried. “You think everything’s alright at home.”

“I do. My man is great and I know he’ll take care of everything. I’m sure that your man will too.”

“Yeah.” She nods. She wraps her arms around herself. “It sounds bad out there.”

I can’t help myself. I walk closer to her. “It’s okay. We’re safe and warm and all our friends and family know to stay safe. Everything is going to be fine.”

She nods but her eyes are still focused on the window. Her teeth nibble on her bottom lip and I want to tug it free, unable to see her hurt herself.

“You want to play a game?” I ask her, stunning myself and her too.

Her eyes widen and she stares at me. “Really?”

I huff. “I don’t know what kind of games they have. But we could check.”

“There’s a backgammon game in here. You want to play?”

“Sure.” I know less than nothing about playing games but if it helps her, I’ll gladly do it.

She gets out the board and hands me the rules which I read. “Seems simple enough.”

We settle down across from each other on the bed and she whispers, “Thank you.”

“For what?” I ask, setting up my pieces.

“You know,” she huffs.

“It’s no big deal, princess.”

We start the game and it quickly turns brutal. “I’m telling you, you can’t do that move,” she huffs and glares at me.

I laugh. “It’s right there in the rules.”

“I think you’re cheating,” she growls and it’s so blinking cute that I want to do more to ruffle her feathers.

“I’m not cheating and you know it. Come on. Finish the game.”

She glares at me but moves to the spot on the board, wincing when she moves her hand.

I immediately move my piece and take her guy off the board and hand it to her.

“I knew it,” she snarls, her golden-amber eyes snapping with fire.

“It’s a game, princess. Stop snarling at me like that!” I laugh. But I love it. She’s so blinking cute. Like an angry little kitten spitting at me.
