Unknown: Why aren’t you replying to me, Lena? Have you forgotten about me already?

Unknown: It’s okay, I will remind you.

A cold chill ran down my spine. All the blood rushed back to my chest, leaving all my extremities cold. This could not be true. This man could not be back in my life. Not after all he had done. Not after I had to crawl out of hell to stand on my own two feet again.

I stared at my phone, willing those messages to go away.

It had been almost a week since I had received the last one, but this time, I was more than sure it was him.

“Ready?” Brandon came to my side.

I placed my phone into my pocket and wiped away any signs of distress on my face. The last thing I needed was questions that I had no answers to.

“Yeah, let’s go.”

“Oh yes, finally quittin’ time!” Brandon said from across the room.

I had been so in my head that the hours between lunch and now had been all but a blur. I had lived through them, but I had not experienced any of it at all.

Brandon and Lisa got up from their chairs, the clock showing it was well past five p.m.

“Hey, guys, I’m heading to Martin’s with friends for a happy hour. You guys are welcome to join if you want.” Brandon asked.

Lisa’s face scrunched in disdain, “I would much rather stick needles in my eyes than have to subject myself to listening to you and your boys talk sports and politics.”

“That’s not all we talk about,” Brandon smirked. He loved trying to irk Lisa. I was almost certain that he had a crush on her, but he had yet to confirm anything.

Lisa’s face contorted even further into a deep frown. Even when she made faces, she still was

a beauty of a woman. Her dark brown eyes were almost black if they didn’t have light shining

in them. Her small but toned form told me the woman took her fitness seriously. Her now

dark brown bob framed her face, aging her. You would never guess that out of the three of us,

she was the youngest at twenty-three.

“Okay, Lisa’s out. What about you, Sel?”

I shook my head, “I think I will sit this one out too, Brandon. Not really feeling my best and should head home and rest.”

“It’s fine,” he sighed, “I will see you guys tomorrow.”

“Don’t come into the office hungover like last time,” Lisa called after him. “I am not cleaning up your puke ever again.”

Brandon blushed, looking shy, “That was one time.”

“One time too many.” The two of them fought like brother and sister.

He said goodbye again and closed the door behind him, leaving me with Lisa. The silence in the room grew incredibly loud, just as it always did when I was with Lisa. We never saw eye to eye, and I had no idea what I could have done to offend her.

But why did that matter? She was not my responsibility, and I was here to work. Besides, I had a lot on my plate already to deal with.

“You look sick,” her eyes weren’t on me; she was putting her things away in her bag. “If you are, instead of exposing everyone here, just take some sick days off work.”

“I’m not sick,” I cleared my throat.
