“It’s not like you didn’t have money before,” I muttered under my breath.

“Excuse me?”

My back stiffened, and I looked up from my notepad. Both men were staring at me. Daniel had a look of absolute rage on his face, while Ashton looked perplexed.

“Nothing I…I was thinking out loud.”

“I know that, but I am interested to hear what you have to say.” Ashton leaned forward as if he was trying to get a better look at me.

I looked at my boss, who gave me those eyes that read that I needed to shut my mouth if I knew what was good for me.

“Nothing,” I cleared my throat. “I said nothing.”

“Hmm, I see.” Ashton regarded me for a moment and then turned back to Daniel. “I would like to talk in private, please, Daniel.”

My heart dropped. Shit, I just had to go and open my damn mouth. Why could I not just keep my mouth shut for once? I had one simple job.

“Of course, Selena, you can leave.”

Reluctantly, I got up and trudged my way to the door. I may have just lost my job. How could I have been so stupid?

Chapter thirteen

Objection

Daniel

“Lovelylittleassistantyouhave there, Sinclair.” I could hear the irritation in his voice. I.

wasn’t sure what Selena had been playing at, but she upset the client, and that was a huge no

in my books. “I understand what this may look like to the rest of the world, but I am not

trying to deprive my ex-wife of anything. We had three years of marriage and then we went

our separate ways.” He continued, “It sometimes feels like she only married me to get her

hands on my money. I would never have married her had I known she was in such bad shape

financially!” He slammed his hand on the table. “I get it, I’m the privileged asshole with the

billionaire dad. I am already a target for everyone. But I am not an asshole who would take

advantage of a woman in any way. Especially financially. I was raised right, and this

whole story has been affecting my entire family. I could handle it if it were just me, but it’s

now my family and I—…”

I could relate to him. He felt the need to protect his family. I knew what kind of weight that was to bear.

“Ashton, I can assure you that I will do everything in my power to ensure you get justice and clear your name. I know we’re friends, and I hate to ask this, but I need to know- is there anything you’re hiding, or perhaps something you haven’t told me that you need to?”

He paused and sternly replied, “No! Of course, I’m not hiding anything from you or her.”

I could see the pain in his eyes. The anguish dripped in his voice. But there was that small glimmer, a little spark of hope that told me he believed in me.

After the meeting was said and done, I called Selena to my office. I was livid. I had no idea what shit she was trying to pull in the meeting, but she had to give me answers, or she was out. I didn’t care what my sister thought. This was my damn business I had no time for little girls throwing hissy fits.
