Xander’s hand rubbed her back comfortingly, and all that sense washed away, and the anger and jealousy came surging through.

“Tell me, Abrams, how many times did you have to open your legs for him to have him so whipped for you?”

The room went dead silent. My eyes locked with hers in a standoff. I had pushed a little too far this time, and I could see it in her eyes.

“How. Fucking. Dare. You.”

Fuck.

The realization of what I had just done weighed on me.

“Selena, I—”

She stood from her chair without a single word and stormed out of the dining room.

My sister turned to me with the kind of anger that I had only seen when she first ran away from home. “You’re an asshole, Daniel. What the hell are you thinking?”

She stood from her seat and ran after her friend. The rest of the table stayed in their seats, but each face had matching looks of disappointment aimed my way, aside from Xander, who looked like he was ready to knock me out.

“I’m going to beat this bitch up,” Xander’s voice filled the silence.

Chapter twenty-two

Under My Skin

Daniel

Xanderlungedformefrom across the table. I was thankful that the kids had been put to bed long before all of this unfolded. The last thing they needed was to see the two of us going at each other like beasts unchained.

Nate leapt into action pulling his friend back, while Seb helped to move Amelia away from the table, then moved to hold me back.

“What is your deal, Sinclair? One minute, you’re acting like you can’t stand the girl, and the next, you are making eyes at her.”

“I don’t know what you think you see, but there are no eyes being made. I simply warned her of what kind of man you are.”

“And why do you care so much? She is grown and able to make her own decisions. And not that it matters to a motherfucker like you, but she and I have had a thing going on for years now.”

His words were acid to my heart. I wanted to rip out his throat for even saying it.

“And as far as I know, it’s no longer a thing.” I kept my voice calm, but inside, the rage was building. The temperature within my core rose, and I knew that very soon, I would be at my boiling point. “You lost her, and now you can’t handle the fact that you can’t get her again.”

His eyes twitched, “You don’t even know what the hell you are talking about. Where do you get off acting like a child? It’s obvious to anyone here that you want her, but yet you still act like a fucking prick every chance you get. This isn’t some grade school bullshit. This is a real woman with real feelings, and you are hurting her. I care about Selena; we all do, and right now, you are hurting her. So now we have a problem.”

Nate pushed his best friend back and whispered in his ear. Whatever he said only made the fury in his eyes intensify.

“I think you both need to be in separate rooms. Seb, take Daniel out of here. I need to take this one outside to cool off.”

Xander didn’t move an inch, and neither did I. But when Seb came up to me and gave me that look, I knew that it was best not to fight him. I had already ruined tonight. I didn’t want to make even more of an embarrassment of myself.

I went into the kitchen with Seb on my heels, ready to intervene should I change my mind.

I sighed and leaned against the sink.

“I don’t know why I said that shit to her. I just saw him with her, and I just saw red. I don’t understand why it bothers me, Seb. I’m always in control. I always know what to expect, and I read people and situations very accurately. But…when it comes to her, I just…I lose my shit.”

I ran a tired hand down my face and leaned against my hands against the countertop.

“She is reckless, irresponsible, and…and justher,” I said, exasperated. “It’s infuriating. She has her method of doing things that’s just wrong. She doesn’t think about the consequences and just throws caution to the wind without a care in the world. She doesn’t think about how her actions could affect others.”
