Xander bit his lip and didn’t pay Daniel any attention. “Morning, champ,” Seb piped in, breaking the awkward tension.

“I just want to apologize to everyone for my behavior last night.”

Xander let out an audible laugh to which Daniel cleared his throat and said, “Xander, mind if we have a word outside?”

Xander looked down and shook his head with a smirk on his face. The rest of us in the room were shooting anxious glances at each other.

“Why not?” Xander finally said and followed Daniel outside.

You could hear a pin drop in the kitchen as we watched them both walk outside to the lake’s edge. I held my breath and prayed that they would be able to keep things civil.

Eventually, I watched as Xander began nodding in agreement at whatever Daniel was saying. And then, as if Daniel was reading my mind, he reached across to Xander, and they shook each other’s hands.

Things might not have been all sunshine and rainbows for the rest of the weekend, but eventually, Xander dropped his vendetta, and we were all able to have a good time.

Before we left that night to go back to Chicago, Xander hugged me and reminded me that should I ever need him, he’d be there for me.

Daniel and I drove home, buzzing from everything that had happened that weekend. We were a new couple, and I was over the moon.

“Come stay with me for a few days,” he said as we approached Illinois. “I have more plans for you.”

“Oh really? And what do these plans entail?”

“I can tell you what they don’t entail.”

“And what’s that?”

“Leaving my bed.”

Chapter twenty-seven

Open Book

Daniel

“How have you not watched The Titanic? It’s such a classic movie.” Selena settled into the seat beside me on the couch and sipped on her wine. “You are an uncultured man, Daniel Sinclair.”

“Me? Uncultured? Romance movies are a farce, and they show the false ideology of love. It’s like Valentine’s Day. It’s all a cooperate scheme to get you to buy into this artificially designed idea of love.”

Her face fell, “why are you such a buzz kill.”

I cocked an eyebrow, “you weren’t saying that when I was taking you from behind last night.”

She blushed. “Okay, okay…” She placed her wine on the coffee table and laid beside me. I pulled her toward me. The beginning part of the movie started in the background, but all I could focus on was her.

She leaned her head against my chest, and her hand rested over my heart. I closed my eyes, pulling her in even closer and relishing in the feel of her body against mine.

These last two weeks had been nothing short of amazing. While I had only planned on her staying a week, we decided we didn’t want to be apart from each other so much just yet, and she stayed a little longer than planned. I had been having more sex in that time than I had in the past year.

There was something addictive about this woman. Everything about her drew me in but the thing that kept me by her side was the light in her. I was a moth to the flame—and I didn’t mind at all.

Sexually, we had always been explosive, but it was in the quiet moments like these that I felt the closest to her. Selena was all kinds of chaos, but in the quiet like this, she was my peace. There was not a moment when I didn’t feel at ease with her.

The only sound that could be heard in my living room was the gentle soft hum of the TV that had a movie we were meant to be watching but had completely forgotten about.

“Tell me something true,” her gentle whisper reached my ears.

“Something true? What do you mean?”
