“Oh, I beg your pardon, Mr. Busypants. By all means, don’t let me keep you from getting back to your important lawyer firm-y stuff.”

I chuckled. “Whatever. I’ll call you next week.” And with that, we hung up.

I had little to no faith in Selena, but for now, I would humor my sister. I would wait out the contract, and then I would give her the boot.

As long as she stayed in line, there would be no issues from my side.

A knock came at my door, bringing me out of my thoughts and reminding me of where I was. I blinked and went to sit at my large wooden desk.

“Come in,” I reached for the case file I had been handed from Mark when I first got in.

“Mr. Sinclair?” My assistant Mark stood at the door, “Selena is here for your debrief meeting, sir.”

My back tensed, “Why do I have her? I thought I would have Brandon on this case?”

“Mr. Rogers poached Brandon for another case.” She pursed her lips, “I can call Lisa if you would like.”

I shook my head, “that won’t be necessary. Bring her in. If she wants to make it here, she must be a quick learner.”

Mark nodded her head and closed the door. I was going to let her stay, but that didn’t mean I would make life easy for her.

A few minutes later, Selena walked in with a notepad in hand. Unlike all the other times I had met her outside of this setting, she didn’t have that mischievous glint in her eyes.

“Have a seat, Selena.” I gestured to the chair on the other side of the desk.

She made herself comfortable and then looked up to meet my gaze. Her violet eyes stared me

down, holding me in my place. I could see the resolve in them. As I stood up to walk around

to the front of my desk, Selena shifted in her seat a bit. I leaned up against the desk and

crossed my arms. I was trying to intimidate her. I wanted her to physically feel the power

structure in this firm.

Looking down at her from my position, I could tell I was making her squirm, though with

Selena, I never knew if it was because of my proximity to her. I knew she had something for

me, but this was not the place to mess around.

She crossed her long legs as she settled in. I glanced down at them and immediately caught

myself. When our eyes met again, a slight smile spread across her face. She had also seen me

look.

She was ready to fight and earn her place here, and that only meant that breaking her would

be quite the challenge. But I had never backed down from a single challenge in my life

before.

“Where shall we begin, Mr. Sinclair?” The way she said my name with a slight bitter twang showed that the firecracker I knew her to be was still simmering just below the surface. She looked up at me with inquisitive eyes, and I took a breath to begin.

Best of luck, Miss Abrams. Welcome to the lion’s den.
