“I heard you’re thinkin’ about poppin’ the question.” His smile deepened.

“Oh yeah? And who told ya that?”

“Your brother.” At least he didn’t try and skirt around the question.

“I’m gonna kill him. Did he tell anyone else?”

“Just me.” Another wave of silence passed before he spoke again. “So? You gonna do it?”

“I was, but I don’t think it’s a good idea. She told me earlier she doesn’t want our lives to change, that she likes things the way they are.”

“Let me give you some advice, Hawke. Women don’t know what they want until we tell ’em.” Momentarily, he seemed lost in thought. “Then again, neither do we. Just do it. It’s time. Stop fuckin’ around.” He hopped off his stool without another word and sauntered toward his ol’ lady, grabbing her around the waist and pulling her close. He whispered something in her ear, and I wished I could feel half as at ease as he did right now.

Could it be that simple?

Was Marek right?

Should I shove aside all doubt and just do it?

“I’m so happy we came back for this. I really missed everyone.” Edana’s warm breath hit the side of my neck as she circled her arms around my waist and snuggled in close. I couldn’t help it. I glanced down and saw that her tits were pushed up, more amplified now in this position. “Don’t start,” she said when I parted my lips. “I know what you’re thinkin’.”

“How do you know what I was gonna say?”

“Because I know you.”

“If you know me so well, what am I thinking now?”

She studied me before responding. “I’m not having sex with you with everyone here. There’re too many kids around.”

I blurted a laugh; it was exactly what had run through my mind. Although, to be fair, I was a man. We thought about sex more often than not, so she had a pretty good shot at guessing the right answer.

With all the other inner turmoil I’d been dealing with, escaping to bury myself inside her hadn’t honestly been on my radar. But now that she mentioned it, it was all I could think about.

I pushed back to see what she’d say next. “There are only three kids here. Isabelle and Silas are too young to know what’s goin’ on, and Roman hasn’t taken his nose out of whatever he’s doin’ on that iPad.”

“What about Evan and Harrison?” she asked, pointing toward Jagger and Kena’s two kids, who stood nearby. They didn’t think anyone noticed, but they’d been sneaking beers from behind the bar all day. One of those times, Kena caught them, the movement of her hands fluid and quick. They responded in kind, having known sign language their entire lives. I knew some, enough for short pleasantries.

She’d contracted a viral infection when she was a baby, and it ended up damaging the nerves in her larynx. Kena had never spoken a day in her life. I gave Jagger credit for getting involved with her in the first place. That was a lot of work just to get laid. But as it turned out, she was it for him.

“Aren’t they like twenty?”

“No. Evan’s only sixteen and Harrison is seventeen.” Both of them shared their mom’s hair color, although theirs was a lighter shade of brown. Looks wise, Harrison resembled his ol’ man more and more every time I saw him. Evan, however, looked more like Kena.

“They’re hardly kids,” I argued. “The shit I was doin’ at their age…” My words trailed off, smiling at all the fun I had in my teens.

“They’re young enough.”

I pressed my lips to hers, mumbling, “Your argument is weak.”

“Perhaps.” She deepened the kiss, but only for a moment. “I love you. So much.” The adoration in her gaze didn’t go unnoticed, and I wondered if now would be the perfect time to show her how much I loved her as well.

Marek’s words, although brief and what I’d thought a thousand times before, kept replaying over and over in my head.

‘Just do it. It’s time.’

Before my nerves kicked back in, I moved her back and stood up, clasping her hand firmly in mine in case she tried to get away from me once she realized something was up.
