“Doesn’t he know what you do for a living? You can just beat his ass.”

A bitter smile spread across Viv’s face. “It’s actually how we met. At a play party. He thinks of himself as this alpha-Dom, and he wanted to collar me and control everything I did and said.”

Rae had never heard of a Dom trying to own another Dominant. She knew about switches, people who enjoyed both ends of the power-exchange dynamic, but she didn’t understand how two Dominants could work in a relationship, at least not from a kink standpoint.

“He never took my work seriously. He doesn’t believe women should dominate men at all, and he still thinks I’m secretly submissive.”

Rae chuckled. “He obviously doesn’t know you then.”

“That’s the funny thing, hon,” Viv said. “If you’re told something often enough by someone you love, you start to believe it. I had just lost Frederick, and Mark was charming and handsome. He said all the right things, and I ignored all the wrong things.”

“If he comes back, I’m going to whip his eyeballs out of his head.” Rae was only half joking, but Viv’s face turned serious.

“I don’t want you to be anywhere near him when he comes back. Promise me you won’t answer the door if he comes by when I’m not here.”

If it meant getting the old Viv back, Rae would do a lot more than blind Mark, but she said, “I promise.”

They were in serious need of groceries, and Viv was too ill to leave the house. Or that’s what she said, but Rae knew she was fine. Viv had barely left her room in four days, but Rae heard her doing client sessionsevery day. It was like Viv was lying low until the deadline Mark had given her was up.

As much as she hated going to the store alone, Rae grabbed their reusable canvas bags and drove over to Trader Joe’s to get them some necessities. She was trying to find the almond milk Viv liked when she sensed someone staring at her in her peripheral vision.

She casually peered to her right and saw Mark. Now that she had a better look at him, she didn’t see what attracted Viv, who seemed way out of his league. He was of average height, with a forgettable face except for his hazel eyes, but he appeared more muscular than she remembered. For some reason, she wasn’t scared of him and turned to face him head on.

“Do you think following me intimidates me?” Rae said to him.

His eyes penetrated her. “You would know if I was trying to intimidate you.”

“You’re wasting your time being here, so you should go back to whatever rock you crawled out from under.”

He moved close enough to Rae that she smelled his cloying cologne.

“I know you’re leeching off her, preggo. Bet she’s got you set up real nice, buying you things and cooking for you like you’re her pet. She always had a soft spot for losers.”

She sneered at him. “I can see that.”

“You stupid cunt.”

Rae ignored him and went back to searching for the almond milk.

He gripped her shopping cart, preventing her from moving it. “Tell Vivien I still have the thing she wants. And if she ever hopes to get it back, she’ll have the money ready.”

“I’m not telling her anything.” Rae pushed her cart hard to remove his hand. “She doesn’t owe you a penny, and if you come around again, you’ll be violating a protection order, and the cops will be all over your ass.”

The sudden change in his eyes after she mentioned the protection order made Rae wish she’d said nothing about it. He looked ready to strangle her until an older male worker asked them if they needed help with anything. She could tell the store worker was trying to see if she was okay without making a scene.

“No,” Mark said. “I was just leaving.” He gave Rae one last blazing glare. “See you soon, preggo.”

CHAPTER 36

RAE

2024

Rae dragged her ass into work less than an hour after Dayton had dropped her off at her house. She’d taken a quick shower to get the funk off her, the hot water helping to ease her sore muscles. As she ran her pouf over her skin, she saw fingertip-size bruises on her body, mainly over her hips and thighs, and the memory of Dayton’s hands digging into her flesh as he thrust inside her, his throaty moan as he came hard, pulsed heat between her legs so powerful she felt like a newborn foal trying to stand upright for the first time.

When she gave Angel the rundown of the night before, she wasn’t as mad at Rae for lying to her as she’d expected her to be. Her best friend was more worried than anything. And intrigued by what had happened with Dayton.

“Well, that sure complicates things, doesn’t it?” Angel said. “I never thought you’d be crazy enough to screw a cop.”
