We get our gifts out from under the Christmas tree while she’s gone. “What do you think she’s doing?”

“By the sounds of her footsteps and the door, I think she went to the bathroom.”

“Good thing we didn’t follow.” Mark cracks himself up. It’s good to see him relax. He’s finally found the thing he’s been searching the planet for, and it was at home.

Bianca does an abrupt halt when she enters the room and we’re not on the couch.

“Over here.” I wave her gift in the air.

“Your present will be ready in a few minutes.” She glances over her shoulder.

“No worries, this isn’t your real gift anyway.”

“Real gift?”

“This one’s sort of utilitarian, and will need a little bit of an explanation.”

She takes the package from my hands and unwraps it, holding up two new phones.

“I got you a new phone because yours was a little broken.”

“A little? The screen was nearly unusable.”

I kiss her nose. “I was being kind.”

“And the other phone?”

I take it from her and send a text to all of them. Carl and Mark’s phones buzz from nearby but Bianca’s is farther away.

“That’s my new number. I played it off that night my brothers razzed me about girlfriends, but they were partially right, I had too manyfriends. Now that I have a new number, only the important people can get in touch with me.”

“Hearts will be broken.” Mark can’t resist the opportunity to harass me.

“As long as I never break the one I care about.” I pull Bianca onto my lap. We’re lost in a kiss when a timer sounds from the other room.

“What’s that?” Carl asks, striding to find it.

“Ah! Wait!” Bianca calls. “You all have to get your present at the same time.”

“Where?” I ask as she crawls off of me.

“The bathroom.”

“Our present’s in the bathroom?” Mark stops beside Carl and I join them.

She shrugs.

Carl surges forward first but Mark muscles past him, their shoulders banging into the hallway walls. I’m hot on their heels as we file into the bathroom.

A single pregnancy test stick is on the counter. Mark lifts it. “Fuck yeah!”

A pink plus sign. “We’re having a baby!”

Carl says something but I’m running down the hall to wrap our new mama in the biggest hug ever.

Our brothers join us, and too many kisses are swapped to keep track of. Then Carl asks, “How did you know it would be positive?”

“Sore breasts, tiredness, nausea…all the fun.”
