As she pulls it back, my eyes land on the front table where my three brothers are still sitting. Mark has gone from irritated to feral. Our eyes lock again and he lifts from his chair, but a slight shift from the bodyguard causes Mark to sit. What the hell did that dude say to him to get him under his finger?

I’m conscious of teetering my way to the center of the stage, breathing a sigh of relief when the auctioneer starts rattling numbers, but then it starts to blur.

My brothers raise their paddles. Other people do too, but it’s my brothers. They keep bidding on me. Up and up. I can’t understand a word the auctioneer says except for the occasional repeated number.

Then suddenly… “Sold!”

The room spins and I fear that I’ll faint. Won’t that be disappointing. Thankfully, Jefferson wraps his arm around me. Could he tell? I lean into him.

How did I miss all of the bids? How did I miss the “Going, going, gone”? Was that even said? How much did I go for? Who won me?

“Get off the stage.” The low, growly reverb of Mark’s voice answers my question. He’s getting up from his chair, and the bodyguard doesn’t stop Mark from hopping on stage this time.

Chaos erupts from the back of the room. Whoops and hollers, but it can’t be about my bid. I pull my eyes from Mark as he stampedes toward me.

It’s Aurora’s brothers, the rock stars. They have a concert tonight. Why the hell are they here?

I look to the side and catch Aurora staring wide-eyed, then suddenly I’m swooped off my feet.

My hands flail to stop my fall, but strong, thick arms wrap around me, curling me into the contours of Mark’s chest. My flail lands my arms around his neck. Our faces are inches apart.

Through the anger, the intensity, I see something more intriguing…desire.

He barks at Carl. “Go wrap up the payment.”

As Mark moves furiously toward the exit, his chest rises and falls with heavy breaths. He’s even harder than I imagined. Electricity zings through my body. Will it be just him, or all three?

“What the hell were you thinking?”

The sexy stepbrother fantasy bubble bursts.

I’m too embarrassed to answer. I’ve successfully pissed him off.

I shouldn’t be lost in the woody musk of his cologne tinged with alcohol. I should be gathering my senses. All of them, the logical ones included.

Gathering a moment of clarity, I toss out my prefab answer. “It’s for charity.”

The chill from his demeanor is colder than the winter evening. And the storm in his eyes rages deeper than the front that’s supposed to blow in.

He continues to Sean’s car but doesn’t set me down. “You’re half naked. Everyone knows what you’re hoping for.”

Apparently not, but I don’t say anything. I’m saved by Carl and Sean rushing to our sides. Cindy’s running out behind them with my bag.

“Why aren’t you on stage?”

Sean takes my bag.

“Aurora’s brothers demanded they be allowed to buy her right away.”

Oh no, Cindy was worried about the order. Low rumbles from the street catch everyone’s attention. Motorcycles file into the parking lot.

“Get the fucking car unlocked,” Mark demands.

Sean holds the keys up. “Chill, we already paid. No need to scare her.”

Sean cups his hand over mine, pulling it from around Mark’s neck. “You want him to set you down?”

“Get the fucking car unlocked. I’m not setting her down until I can get her away from the horny-as-fuck rock stars and now this motorcycle gang.”
