She stilled.

“The second—” I had to close my eyes. “I never want to smell that smell again. So long as I live.” I opened my eyes and swallowed down the lump in my throat. “And though this isn’t really a rule, I don’t like your jackass of an ex. What he said about Serkan kept playing on repeat in my head and I wanted a fight. So when I overheard him asking why we were even there, it didn’t take much persuading from me. I apologize I lost my cool.”

You have nothing to apologize for.She paused. So rules one and two fall under the theme of avoiding death as long as possible? No more funerals?

I pressed a hand to my temple with my free hand. “The funeral and celebration of Serkan’s life today was lovely. Dra Skor is better at grief than I am. I am absolutely furious about what happened.”

I am too, Keir. I had to go throw some things.

That made me smirk.

May I add a rule too? I want the honest answer. If you are struggling, don’t hide it from me. You’ve seen me at my worst, I can handle you like this.

I took the last drink of whiskey.

I also have a favor to ask.

“Name it.”

She nudged her head against me and even that made me feel better. To know her skin was not cold.

When you are recovered, your magic fully recouped, we are going to fix that silly pond, and then I would like you to keep trying to shift me back to my human form.

My eyebrows raised. “I thought that was already the plan, Es.”

Yes, well, I’ve had an awful attitude about it. But I will not any longer. I owe it to Serkan to find a way.

“Then we will,” I said firmly, even while knowing it was too close to that promise I wasn’t sure I could keep.

She was quiet a moment. For the record, Zaire made me angry also. While I was throwing branches, rather productively clearing out some dead trees I might add, I wondered if I could keep him away from the celebration today.

“Why didn’t you?” I asked, shocked by her admission.

It would have prevented him from seeing just how many people loved and respected Serkan.

Though I fancied myself good at scheming, the dragon queen before me was even better. “I am sorry if I overstepped.”

You didn’t. Didn’t even use your Enchantment. Minor compared to shifter squabbles, really.

I gestured with my head, feeling exhaustion finally settling in place of the tension. “Go. Be with your people, but thank you for checking in.”

I am unable to fully relax down there, so I needed the break.

It went without saying that she knew it was possible whoever was responsible for Serkan’s death was likely down there, wearing a mask, blending in.

She moved as if readying to leave.I also knew chances were good you were shirtless up here.

“And you wanted to gawk some more, or you wanted to scare me?”

Her wing smacked me as she went. You’ll never know.

CHAPTER31

“Idon’t trust anyone other than Amory and Malachi,” Emric stated.

We were crammed in my room around my small table eating breakfast and sniffing out traitors. All in a morning’s work. John had made a sheet of parchment for each of the queen’s advisors, and we were taking turns verbalizing what we knew about each of them. I had demanded a parchment be added for the queen’s father. He wasn’t my favorite person, but more than that, I didn’t trust him. Oddly enough, Archer and I had the most information to provide. Archer because he had formed some relationships with other workers in the castle and knew gossip.

John looked over the top of his glasses in his signature look. “Even then we have to approach this as if from an unbiased place. How well do we really know either Amory or Malachi?”
