She held on even tighter.

Emric stood in the doorway to check on us.

“Can we ring for Amory? Would that help?” I asked her.

She shook her head and made no move to leave our spot on the tiled floor. “No.” Her voice still sounded so hoarse.

“Grab her water, would you?” I asked Emric.

“I don’t want anyone to see me like this,” she finally got out by the time Emric returned. “Not even the two of you.”

“Nonsense,” Emric said as he leaned down to hand me the water. “We are part of the team. If you can lose your shit with anyone, it’s us.”

She took the water and took another sip. “Thank goodness you didn’t say biscuits again.”

I laughed. It was that moment, seeing her joking through her struggles, that same damn wit she’d had trapped in her dragon form which told me all of this was going to be okay. Not because of what I had done, but because of how strong she was.

Emric gave me a nod as he left us be again.

“We can sit here for as long as you’d like,” I offered. “And then will you try to eat some more bread for me?”

She let out a sigh. “Ever my moon.”

“I noticed you left offannoyingthis time.”

I felt her smile. “Keir?”

“Esta?”

“Thank you.”

“It was nothing.”

She was quiet so long I wondered if she was sleeping again. But she hadn’t pulled away from my arm she was holding in a death grip to her. Finally, she said, “Did it hurt?”

There was no sense in lying to her. “It was...heavy. It took a lot of effort.” I paused. “My only regret is that I couldn’t have figured it out sooner. I had to switch the way I was thinking about it. Rather than focus on you and healing you, I had to focus on the poison and get it out of you. And put it into the lake before we obliterated it.” Another pause. “But I wish Serkan could have been there to see it. Seen usrisk it for the biscuit.”

Esta laughed, and though it sounded groggy as hell, actually getting to hear when I made her laugh was my new favorite thing. “How long am I taking over your room?”

“For as long as you need it.”

“Can you help me up? I’m going to attend to some needs and then try to eat this bread you speak of before I get too tired again.”

An hour later, she sighed into the sheets of my bed, pulling the covers up around her. I was on top of the covers, feet propped up beside her as I forced her to eat the bread.

“Oh how I have missed beds,” she said sleepily.

“You could have ordered them to make you one massive bed,” Emric provided from his spot.

“But I wouldn’t have really been able to feel it,” Esta argued as her eyelids closed.

I moved to hop back up, but she reached out a hand, the same hand I had changed numerous times before I managed to get her shifted back into her human form. “Stay, please. Both of you. Right where you are.”

“Not going anywhere, sweetheart,” I assured her even though I knew deep down it was all a lie.

Eventually, I was going to have to leave her.
