The huge land dragon beneath me was just as fearsome looking as the other land dragon, but possibly even bigger. A roped netting surrounded him, even along his tail, so much so that other than his head, you couldn’t truly see a part of the dragon without the net. The other dragon must have been chewing the area around his head, the only reason any part of him at all was free.

He was no longer struggling, but still trapped. I wondered if it was because of what I had Malachi tell them, or if he was that worn out and tired.

The water was only about thirty or so feet deep, yet there was still so much netting. Who had done this? And for what purpose? I hadn’t been here long, but Dra Skor was a country which respected their animals and creatures, shifted or otherwise.

Though I still had to swim with the thin layer of air surrounding me, I used my magic to move me to the head of the dragon to get me there faster. I pointed to my hand and then the rope, trying to tell him I was going to use my magic on the ropes.

The land dragon’s blue eyes flared open in alarm, but the other land dragon moved to nudge me forward, apparently wanting me to hurry.

I brought my magic into my left palm and imagined heating the ropes so that they were brittle and fell away. And then I sent my magic out, to travel along the ropes. I sent more and more, twisting and turning my magic around and around until all the thick netting was covered, lit up in blue, and then I sent even more heat into the ropes.

The dragon in front of me tensed as if he felt the heat. And though my magic could make him feel as if he was on fire if I so desired, I should not be able to kill another human with my magic. Our Enchantment allowed us to weaken others and allow them to feel pain, but we were left to deliver the killing blows ourselves. However, Jorah had found a loophole in that, so I continued to will that the dragon would not get burnt, the netting burn free.

In a blast that sent me and the other land dragon backward, half of the netting disintegrated into the water, portions of rope falling to the sea floor beneath us. Instead of flames on the pieces of rope, my blue magic was seen, until the rope was gone, in which the spots where my magic had been turned black.

The rope all fell away, but a thin netting remained. And panic hit my gut as I realized what I was seeing before me. A substance I was beginning to hate more than anything.

A thin line of iron netting now surrounded the dragon.

He had one foot free, the rest still stuck. The iron netting must have been wrapped up in a portion of the rope netting, ensuring that the dragon was not going anywhere.

The other dragon went up for air. I needed to also, not to breathe, but because I needed to speak.

I gave the trapped dragon a pat on the nose as I went, feeling and seeing his misery. His head and one foot were free, but he still couldn’t move or swim. And his eyelids were beginning to get droopy.

I surged upward, breaking the water, and letting my air pocket fall.

I turned to the free dragon. “Tell them there was iron in the netting. I need something to break through it. Speak to the others and see what they can find.”

The dragon let out a deafening roar, which I took to mean that my message was being delivered.

I didn’t waste time, but instead, I tried to make an air pocket in my hands. We were stuck while we waited for a tool, but I was going to see if I could get the trapped dragon a little air.

I used one hand to form the air pocket around myself, and then wrapped the ball of air around and around with my other hand, strengthening and enlarging it. My ball of air wouldn’t last long under the pressure of the water, but it only needed to last long enough to get the dragon some relief. I tried to make it big enough to fit just around the dragon’s snout.

And then I dove back down, using my magic to take me there faster.

The dragon was half droopy. My heart stuttered.

No. We were not going to lose him this way.

I threw the ball of air at the dragon.

He was so out of it, he didn’t notice it hit his face until it landed, in which his eyes flared, and he jerked awake.

It had worked. He had gotten at least a little breath.

The other land dragon was back so I pointed above.

As soon as I was above water, I said, “I am going to do that again. It got him a little air. Did you deliver our message?”

Yes. Whit went after a diamond encrusted saw not far in Keld. Will be back any minute.

I treaded the water next to her. Thinking. I couldn’t help but blurt out. “Why the hell would someone use iron netting on one of your shifters?”

I have no idea, the dragon growled.

“I am going to dive below and give him another pocket of air,” I offered. “Bring me the saw when it arrives.”
