“We should really get going before you get stampeded with the rest of the shifters,” Amory offered with a smile. “They’re likely already on the way to see this.”

We dried ourselves off and began walking to our rides to leave, but the fox stopped me, brushing his head against my hand.Thank you, Prince of Wylan.

“You’re welcome,” I offered, though I still didn’t even know his name.

I supposed even just the change of the color of the lake was enough hope for them to cling to. Something had finally changed. They still couldn’t switch forms, but their sanctuary was at least clean and clear.

“Onward to The Aaruk?” Amory asked.

I shrugged. “We are using so much I am afraid we have time for only one more.”

Owen stretched his back. “I was just going to mention how this reminded me of the forest fire in Kavan Keep. I’m going to sleep like a baby on the way home.”

“When don’t you?” Jorah jested.

“Valid point,” he agreed.

They continued to argue. Because those two could argue about who had more fingers.

Malachi stepped forward and nudged me.Let’s head to The Drak then. It’s on the way to Keld.

“But The Aaruk is yours,” I argued.

Because of what you’ve been able to do here today, you can likely try tomorrow,Malachi offered logically.Even if it is without the help of your friends.

Though I was appreciative of his vote of confidence, with how much magic we had poured into the first two lakes, I wasn’t sure I was capable of doing a thing on my own.

Yet I stole a glance at Esta who seemed to be speaking with Whit and I knew that before Jorah and Owen left, if there was one more lake I selfishly wanted to try, it was hers.

“Lead the way.”

CHAPTER21

It is advisable while near The Drak not to go anywhere except the border of the lake,Esta told all of us.

“Of course,” I offered, unsure of the warning. Had we accidentally strayed too far from the lake during one of our previous trials?

Dragons are normally temperamental creatures, but if they think you are looking too closely at their hoards, they become a bit defensive.

I thought of all the times Esta grabbed the trinkets we had brought for her and fought off a grin. How big were their hoards?

So if you see a cave, a dragon’s lair, stay away,Esta added as an afterthought as she began our descent.

“Thank you for telling us,” Owen said with a slight bow. “We do not wish to offend. Or infuriate.”

The queen snorted. Not so sure about that. Your Prince does like to... push buttons.

“Yeah, well, I can’t speak for him. He’s always been determined. A bit bratty too.” Owen was grinning over at me from Malachi’s back, clearly goading me.

“If we are all done admiring m—” Whatever insanely witty comment I had ready to deliver died on my lips as we dipped down into a hole in the trees and dropped down into The Drak.

The Drak’s color theme was not black, like I had assumed; it was hues of purples. The darkest rich purples somehow still held color without being black itself. Brighter purples graced the leaves and vegetation. Flowers lined the lake which where petaled with so many differing colors of lavender and lilac, I wanted to pick one and examine it closer. The grass was a grayish purple which brought contrast to the rest of the colors.

“Wow,” Jorah commented. “It’s lovely.”

We got off our mounts and looked at the area around us. This sanctuary was hidden farther into a wooded area and was surrounded by so many trees that I wasn’t sure you would even see The Drak by flying overhead. There was just the small opening in the trees, and all of this hiding underneath.

I felt as if someone was watching us as my magic flared slightly in confirmation.
