Miles huffed his disagreement.
“Happens to the best of us,” Dex called from where he watched along the fence.
“I really thought I had you there for a moment,” Miles stated.
He reminded me of a younger me sometimes. I reached out and ruffled his hair, which I knew he would hate. “You only thought that because I allowed you to.”
Fiend,Malachi sent me.
“Brute,” I said back.
He playfully nudged me as I came over.This is so much fun, I am contemplating putting a dagger in my teeth and having a go.
“The size of your hooves would give you a distinct advantage,” I laughed.
The next voice in my head was decidedly female.Shirtless again.
I spun around, not even noticing the queen had landed outside the arena, her head peeking over the edge of it. “Always so quick to notice my clothing options.”
Always so quick to shed them,she offered back. Then she added rather quickly,Will you please return to your rooms now? I don’t think you realize how sensationalized you have become here.
Malachi sent to both of us,Don’t be mad at them, it was my idea. I needed this.
Fine,Esta responded.But can you get them back to their rooms now? The meeting is over.
Give me ten minutes?Our princeypoo is in the finals.
She hesitated long enough I wondered if they were saying something I wasn’t included on.
Come on, Es.You know you want to watch it too.
Fine,she finally responded.One more fight. That is it. Our princeypoo is supposed to be resting anyway.
I put a fist in the air in excitement and then wrapped my arm around Malachi to pat his neck in thanks.
She once made a man cry in this ring,Malachi told me.
“In which form?”
Human,he added.
I grinned and gave my head a shake as I spun in her direction. I felt like I should be yelling because of the distance, but I knew she could hear it regardless of my volume, so I said in a normal voice, “I knew it. I knew you could swing a sword.”
How would you pick that up from seeing me in this form? Did you just presume the beastliness transfers over?
Though I felt the amusement in her tone, I also thought my answer mattered to her. Dex beckoned to me, my final round ending up being against Emric, of course. I turned back to the queen and said, “No. It is that nothing about your personality screams fragile.”
And while she thought that over, I grabbed my sword and went back to work.

I had the door ajar,so I heard the queen before she landed on my balcony. More than tired from the day’s events, I had just crawled into bed, so I got back up and headed over to the door, leaning against it. “Come to congratulate the champion?”
I had bested Emric, though he had more than made me earn it. I had a nick on my skin to prove it. And though she had watched the entire match, Esta had taken off as soon as we had finished our training for the day.
Like you need the boost to your ego,she stated as she curled into the corner on my balcony.
“I don’t, but your flattery is still welcomed all the same.” I grinned.
