“A shame she didn’t just remarry then,” the other person said.

I looked to the queen, seeing anger flare in her eyes.

She gestured with her head and we began walking again, going completely unnoticed by General Zaire and presumably one of his men.

We were quiet for a few minutes, and then finally I stated, “You have far better hearing than I do. Tell me I misunderstood. Tell me he was not insulting Serkan.”

She let out a sigh so heavy I could feel the breeze of it in the empty hall. She was quiet for so long, I thought she wasn’t going to give me an answer at all. And then finally,Not being able to shift has been hard on Zaire. He was the largest drake. And now that he is stuck in his human form....”

“Serkan is now the biggest male dragon?” I guessed.

Yes.She paused. He wasn’t always this way. He compensates with barbed words because he can no longer shift and feels like less of a man for it.

“That doesn’t give him the right to tear down Serkan like that,” I argued. I felt oddly drawn to the elderly dragon. Even if he was a little rough around the edges.

You are right,she offered back.

“Are you the largest female dragon?”

She gave her head a slight shake. No, though I am quite large, size of female dragons has never been as big of a deal for us. I am a royal dragon, and—she cut off as if contemplating her words.

“What?” I asked. “Just say it.”

As conceited as it sounds, my dragon form is appealing to the eyes. I have no horns, my scales are smooth along my form, and my wings are not as rugged or disproportioned as other dragons.

“So you’re the most beautiful dragon?”

She puffed out a smoke ring.I think it is more so the royal blood running through me which makes me most revered of the female dragons. Savanna is technically bigger than I am.

Nothing but our footsteps could be heard as we continued on.

Finally, I had to ask it. The fact that she had heard them and felt compelled to eavesdrop and spy on Zaire said a lot about her trust in him. “So if the unthinkable happens and we are able to get you all to shift back, what then? Will you just go back to being engaged tothat?”

She let out another long sigh.I do not truthfully know. We have all changed these last nine years.

“You deserve better,” I offered quietly.

She didn’t answer, but I knew she heard it.

CHAPTER26

“Pfffft.”

“Not again,” I groaned.

“Pffffft.”

“If this is going to become a regular thing, can you chew on some mints beforehand?”

I haven’t had a mint in forever. Just be sure to make them peppermint, would you? The queen’s favorite.A pause.Would you rather I nibble on your ear?

I choked on a laugh. “Not exactly my type, Malachi. And I am fairly certain I am not yours either.”

He somehow managed to grab my blanket with his teeth and stepped backward with it.

“Excited?” I asked.

Entirely. In the words of Kian, ‘let us commence.’
