I looked to see him heading downward to find out who had done it. He gave a frustrated bob with his neck before letting out an angry whinny of his own. I hoped he was able to alert some of the others at least.

Stay with us just in case, the queen pleaded. Not to mention you have riders.

Just in case she succumbed to her injury, or just in case there were more attacks, I didn’t know which she meant.

We had only been in the air for a minute, but it felt like so much longer as I spotted The Drak opening from above.

Malachi surged ahead and they dipped down into the clearing, I assumed to let John and Emric off. Before we began to lower down, two large dragons burst from the hole to The Drak, Serkan and Nyx, wings beating powerfully as they rose fast. If I could let out my own roar, I would’ve. I hoped they found whoever had done this and showed them no mercies.

My vision is going blurry,Esta admitted.

“We need to get the spear out of you,” I explained. Or would that only make her bleed faster? Still, if it was tipped in iron, the iron was still in her. Instinct told me we had to get that out.

We dipped low enough that my stomach dropped, and I looked up at her head, realizing she was struggling to stay conscious. I was going to murder whoever had done this, but first things first, we needed to get Esta safely to the ground.

Knowing that I was nearing burnout as it was, I didn’t have the privilege of guessing with my magic or sending it along her skin to find the spear, but if I could just see the actual location of where her injury was, I could focus what I had left on a single location. Instinct told me that was needed first. To get the iron away from her.

“Esta, open your palm please.” She did so, releasing her grip on me, and I used a small amount of magic to move me to her back next to Amory.

Amory immediately pointed to the direction of the queen’s right wing, and I could see underneath it, the spear sticking out.

“Almost got her damn wing,” I bit out angrily. And that gave my magic a surge of power too, feeding off my emotions, my rage.

I wrapped one arm around Amory to steady myself and put the other hand that direction as I urged my magic to pull the spear free from Esta’s skin. My magic wrapped around the spear and tugged.

Esta let out a cry of pain.

“I’m sorry,” I told her as she dipped again, my arm around Amory the only thing saving me from falling. “I am so sorry.”

Just do it,she gasped.

I sent another surge of my power, and the spear finally pulled free. I sent it wrapped in my magic gently to the ground, hoping it wouldn’t harm anything on the way down.

Thank you,Esta gasped. Her wings gave three big beats, and then they stalled.

“Esta?” I asked as we began to free fall. What if getting the spear out hadn’t been what I should’ve done? My panic increased tenfold as there was no answer.

“Esta?!” Amory repeated, sounding as panicked as I felt.

Malachi was back next to us but without John. She passed out.

I looked to the ground and saw that we were definitely headed down at a fast pace, and not one that would land us softly into The Drak, but next to it. In a highly wooded area.

I began sending my magic with both hands directly beneath us to catch her. Esta had strong skin, but already being hurt, I didn’t know what crashing into the ground would do to her. It couldn’t be good.

I felt dizzy, I just wasn’t sure if it was from burnout or our plummet.

Still, I sent more and more magic beneath us to catch Esta, taking care to wrap Amory in a cushioned bubble of my magic also, so she could be safe even if she fell.

Esta gave a jerk as if fighting consciousness. Already feeling unsteady, the result was that I rolled off her scales and into the air.

I was almost to the trees, the ground nearing at an alarming speed for all of us. If I aimed correctly, I was sure I could break my own fall with one of the trees, using my magic to save Esta and Amory.

Catch yourself, dammit,Malachi urged.

I shook my head and leaned to the left, or so I assumed as everything was still dizzy and the falling sensation in my stomach made all directions feel a bit hazy. I kept sending the magic to Esta and Amory and not myself.

“Keir!” Amory screamed from around my blue magic. It hadn’t been a sound barrier, so I heard every bit of her concern.
