“He doesn’t matter,” Cara said. “Look at me.” She waited until her father looked back at her. “Do you trust me?”

He was silent for a long moment. “I do.”

“Then trust me. Please. Just for a minute.”

“Just for a minute?”

“I... I’m coming back.” She glanced at Nick, and he saw the resolve in her eyes. “I’ll be right back. I promise.”

Eric hesitated. “Promise?”

“Promise.”

He took a shaky breath. “One minute, and then I’m coming after you.”

She nodded. “I’ll be back.”

Nick and Henry had already started to move towards the car, parked just up the street. Cara hurried after them, and she saw Nick looking past her. She followed his gaze and realised he was looking at the elder. She was near the back of the crowd of witches.

“Nick!”

“Let’s get out of here,” Nick said.

“I can’t.”

Nick hesitated with one hand on the car door, and Henry patted him on the shoulder. “I’ll start the engine. We need to leave as soon as possible. Those wards won’t hold forever.”

Nick stepped closer to her. “I understand. They’re your family. Stay.”

“I don’t want to leave you, but I have to.”

“I know,” he said. “You have to stay. I’ll be fine. We’ll be fine.”

“Our best chance of saving Quinn and Julia is right here,” she said. “The elders are powerful, and the coven has the numbers we need. Maybe I can make them see sense. They might be calmer if it’s just me.”

“You mean if they’re not constantly waiting for me to kill them?”

“Yes.”

“Fair enough.”

Cara glanced over her shoulder again. “Do you think they can see us properly?”

Nick frowned. “Definitely. Why?”

Cara pulled him down to her by the front of his t-shirt and leaned up, and she kissed him hard. It ended too quickly, and when she let him go, she gave him a smile.

“Don’t do anything stupid,” she said.

“I won’t if you won’t.”

She walked back to the other witches, and Nick watched her until Henry tapped his knuckles against the car window.

“Come on, Nick. We need to get out of here.”
