“Not here,” she said. “He wasn’t home when we arrived. Quite rude, really, leaving Henry to face us all alone.”

“I don’t know what you want with me, but Brett stays out of it.”

“You think I want you?” she laughed. “Such arrogance. I’m not here for you, Nick. Why would I be? You’ve been given every chance to cooperate, and you’ve done nothing but be a thorn in our side. You had your chance.”

“Then what do you want?”

“The vampire, of course,” Faye said. “I sired him. Brett belongs to me.”

“He doesn’t belong to you.”

“You understand so little of our world.”

“I don’t care about vampire social rules,” he snapped. “You can’t have him.”

“The situation is slightly more complicated than mere social expectations,” she said, but she waved a hand dismissively. “Not that it matters. I won’t bore you with the details, since you don’t have a choice. It doesn’t matter what you want. I’m taking him.”

“I’ll stop you,” Nick said, even though he had no idea how he was going to manage it.

“Will you? What did you have in mind? I’m curious, Nick, how exactly did you plan to stop us? There are three powerful, mature vampires in front of you, and it appears that you’ve shown up without a single weapon.”

He hesitated, scrambling for a solution. There was a dagger on his belt, hidden by his shirt, but it wasn’t enough.

“If you’re not here for me, why are you telling me all this?” Nick asked.

Her smile widened. “It’s an old strategy. You might have heard of it.”

“What strategy?”

“Stalling.”

“You’re waiting for Brett.”

She grinned, showing a perfect, white smile with sharp canines. “I could have knocked you unconscious, but recently, I’ve noticed how difficult it can be to find good conversation. No offence, boys.”

Richards and Dixon frowned at each other, but she kept talking before they could reply.

“Also,” Faye said. “While I doubt you pose any real threat to me, I’ve been warned against physical contact with a void.”

“I won’t let you hurt him,” Nick said. “We’re doing this right here, right now, before Brett gets back.”

“Silly boy, did you think I’d show my hand if I didn’t already know I won?”

“What?”

Faye nodded to the door behind him. “My hearing is a lot more sensitive than yours.”

Nick turned as Brett stepped into the room.

“What’s going on?”

Chapter 50 - Nick

Brett snarled at the sight of Henry on the couch and he lunged at Faye, crossing the room in a blur.

Nick flinched at the speed and savagery from his brother, but the fight didn’t last long.
