Cara took a breath to steady herself, even while Nick moved in front of her to put himself between her and the coven. “Everyone! Listen-”

“Step aside!”

All three elders came out of the house - Ana, Violet, and Irina - and the rest of the coven spread apart into two groups, leaving an empty path through the middle.

The three women stepped forward and threw their arms out, and a huge wave of telekinetic energy hurled out of their hands. The wave ripped through earth and threw dirt and grass into the air as it destroyed the ground. It swept towards Nick and Cara at terrifying speed.

Cara gasped, fumbling for a spell to protect them, but Nick just planted his feet and pulled her against his back. The wave of destruction hit them and she grabbed him tightly, but nothing happened. The garden around them ripped apart, and her hair lifted in a gentle breeze, but nothing else happened.

Cara blinked and stepped back, and after a second, Nick released her. The coven stood in shocked silence, and they all stared at the untouched grass where Nick and Cara were standing.

Only the elders seemed unsurprised, but they didn’t attack again. They were just looking at Nick - actually, they were looking at both of them, she realised. Their eyes flicked between her and Nick.

She was still reeling from what just happened, so it took her a moment to notice Nick. Dark veins burned across his skin, so vibrant that they looked alive. His entire body was covered in crossing lines of black power.

“Nick?” she whispered.

He glanced at her, flashing blue eyes without a trace of darkness.

Before anyone could do anything else, the door was thrown open again.

“Enough!” Eric roared. His face was a thundercloud, and he glared at the elders as he rushed in front of the coven. He stood in the empty space between the two groups.

“Remember your place, Eric,” Ana said. She was the smallest of the elders, the same woman who faced Nick and Cara before, but she spoke for all of them.

“You attacked my daughter outside our home. You could have killed her.”

“We were in control,” Violet said. “She will not come to harm by our hand.”

“Don’t lie to me. I felt the power from inside the house. Are you arrogant enough to believe you could control that?”

“We had control,” Irina said.

“Mom is going to lose her head when she sees the garden,” Cara said. The words tumbled out of her mouth before she could stop herself, and she blushed when the coven’s attention turned to her.

Her father glanced towards her. “We’ll talk later, Cara.” He shot a glare at Nick, but noise from the house distracted him.

“What in the world is happening?” Rose strode out of the house with the dog at her heels. Finn padded across the porch without a care in the world, and he lazily wagged his tail as he passed the witches at the back of the crowd.

“Your husband is interfering with coven affairs,” Irina said.

Rose paused, and her eyes flicked around as she took in the gathered witches, the ruined garden, and finally, Cara standing in front of them, partially hidden by Nick’s body.

“I felt the magic surge,” Rose said, walking to join her husband. “It interrupted our ritual.”

“Our apologies,” Violet said. “There were extenuating circumstances of which you are now aware.”

Rose looked at Nick, and she nodded. “Eric, let them continue. They won’t hurt Cara. She’s a member of this coven.”

Eric looked like he was about to explode, and it was only made worse when the elders walked forward. They split apart to walk past Eric and Rose, and he started to move into their path, but Rose took his arm. She shook her head slightly and whispered something so quietly that nobody else could hear.

Cara didn’t know what she said, but he stayed where he was.

“Move away from him, child,” Ana said.

“No,” Cara said. “I’m not leaving. We’re here to talk.”

The three elders were silent for a moment, and Cara could see their hands touching briefly. She felt the briefest flash of magic, and then it clicked. Telepathy. She had heard the stories, but she never imagined it was real. Were they really reading each other’s minds?
