“You’re a void.”

“It’s not enough. Why the hell is everyone so scared of me? I can’t do anything except steal magic.”

“Not necessarily,” Cara said.

“What do you mean?”

She didn’t reply. Instead, she tilted her head as she tried to listen. It took a moment to realise she wasn’t hearing anything - she was sensing it.

“Cara?”

“Wait. There’s... something. I don’t know what it is, but get ready.”

He frowned and glanced around, searching for whatever she could feel.

“There!” she gasped, whirling to face the window beside them.

Glass exploded as a vampire threw himself through the window. She threw out her hands and fire exploded from her hands. The fire blasted through the deadly shards of glass flying through the air. The vampires rolled to his feet, somehow unharmed by the flames, and he lunged.

Nick swung. A thud, a kick, a sickening crack, and then nothing.

Cara dropped her hands, but they were trembling slightly, and she clenched her fists.

“Thanks,” she said.

“Thanks for stopping us from being shredded to ribbons by the glass.”

Nick kept going, sticking his head around the corner before he walked out into the open.

“What were you about to say?” he asked.

It took her a few seconds to remember. “Oh. I was saying that you might not necessarily be limited to draining witch magic.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Magic is just energy. Supernatural energy, of course, but still energy.”

Nick was quiet for a moment. “Okay.”

“It would explain why vampires are scared of you. And what you did to Jackson. As far as I know, the void fear extends to most supernatural creatures. Everyone is afraid. No offence.”

“None taken. Faye mentioned something about not wanting to touch me. Physical touch. She was warned not to come too close.”

“So maybe your void is dangerous to them.”

He didn’t reply for a few seconds, and she wondered what was going through his head.

“You’re right,” Nick said. “When I fought the vampires who-” He broke off. “The ones who broke into my house. I fought them, and I drained their power. I think. When we have time, I’ll tell you about it.”

Cara set that information aside for later. “No wonder they’re afraid of you. You can use the void on them.” She frowned. “I’m not saying you should try it today. Unless it’s an emergency. Don’t get that close to them, it’s too dangerous.”

“It’s fine, Cara. Even if I can do that, I’m sure my club is more effective than my hands.”

“It’s a kanabo.”

“Sure.”

They finally found a huge, wide staircase that led upstairs, and it looked like it kept going through the next floor, and continued up. Hopefully, it went all the way to the top.
