“Not that bad,” she said quickly. “Just a scratch, really.”

Brett raised an eyebrow at her, but he didn’t call out her small lie. Stumbling home covered in blood was a little more thanjust a scratch.

Nick was watching her with narrowed eyes, and she kept her chin up and met his gaze evenly.

“Can I talk to you in the hall?” he asked.

She nodded, stepping past Brett, who gave her a small smile, and Nick followed her through.

“Listen, Nick, I didn’t mean to-”

He closed the door and stepped closer, and she stepped back quickly. Her back hit the wall, and she looked up at him.

His blue eyes narrowed again. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

“I... I know that. You just surprised me.”

She straightened her back and tried to look more confident than she felt. They were alone again, in another hallway, and despite everything - his power, his anger, the fact that he was so much bigger than she was - she felt her stomach twist. It wasn’t fear, even though it should have been. It was something else. It pulled her towards him, and she forced herself to ignore it.

“There’s blood on your shirt,” he said.

She glanced down. “It’s just a few dots. It’ll wash out. Your clothes are worse.”

He frowned and looked down at himself. “There’s no blood on my clothes.”

“No, I mean... You smell like vampires.”

“I can’t smell anything.”

“It’s... It’s a witch thing. I suppose I should say that I can sense the vampire energy on you, but you know what I mean.”

“I don’t, but I’ll catch up. You’re going to teach me.”

She bristled at his tone. “Oh, am I?”

“You are. You owe me.”

She laughed. “I owe you? You’re going to have to explain that one to me.”

“You triggered this void thing, you let out the secret about who I was, and you basically brought vampires to my door. The least you can do is show me the ropes about magic and vampires and whatever else is out there.”

She pushed off the wall and glared up at him. “I’ll admit to some of that, but the rest is bull. I didn’t make you a void. I didn’t involve vampires. Ididtell my parents, after I discussed it with you, but I didn’t know how they’d react. I’ll take responsibility for that, but the rest is not my fault. You were a void before you met me, and the vampires would have come for you eventually, and I came here tonight to help. I was about to heal Brett’s head before I cleaned it and realised it looked worse than it actually was. He was a mess - I thought he’d need serious help.”

“You said it was just a scratch.”

“I was being nice to you! Clearly, that was another mistake on my part.”

He got quiet for a moment, but he didn’t step back, and she suddenly realised that she’d brought herself even closer to him. She had to look up at him, and she could feel the heat coming from his skin. His chest was right in front of her face, and she got even more annoyed at herself for noticing.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“What?”

“I’m sorry. Thank you for helping Brett.”

She frowned. “No problem. And I’m sorry for letting my parents tell people about you. If I could have stopped it, I would have, but I didn’t, and it put you and your brother in danger.”

He ran a hand through his hair, and her eyes flicked to his arm as his sleeve slipped back. She forced her eyes back to his face.
