Nick chose the red chair, and she took the blue. “I could’ve called,” he said. “But I need advice, and I didn’t want to talk over the phone.”

“What’s up?”

“I lied to my dad,” he said. “He asked if there was anything he needed to know, and I didn’t tell him.”

“It’s a lot to tell.”

“It is, but I have to wonder if he already knows. Who else would’ve put the wards around the house?”

“Even if he knows about magic, it doesn’t mean he was keeping it from you for a bad reason. Maybe he’s trying to protect you, keep you out of it.”

“Maybe. Probably. That sounds like him.”

“But you’re not sure,” she said.

“No, I’m not. And I want to make sure things are... safer. Before I tell him, I want to make sure we’re safe.”

“So you’re trying to protect him.” She smiled. “It sounds like you have a lot in common.”

Nick brushed past it. “It looks like the vampires are keeping their distance, but Samuel made it clear that he’s expecting a decision. I need to do something. If I wait too long, he’ll do something bad. I can feel it.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I don’t know. I don’t have enough information. I feel like I’m wandering around blind, and I need someone who knows what’s going on.”

Cara hesitated. “Nick, I don’t think I can help much. I’ll do what I can, but my family isn’t telling me anything. The last time I talked to them, it ended badly for you and your brother.”

“Because of the vampires,” Nick said. “Not the witches. Your people didn’t attack us.”

Cara’s voice was soft. “But they could have. They might have done it if Samuel didn’t get there first.”

“Do you really think so?”

“I don’t know. They looked scared. I’ve never seen them like that, and from what I’ve heard, the rest of the coven is reacting the same way.”

Nick sighed. “And people do stupid things when they’re scared.”

“Exactly.”

He was quiet for a while, and he looked off into the distance, lost in his own thoughts. Cara didn’t say anything, she just watched him.

It wasn’t the right time to let herself think about it, but she couldn’t deny the fact that she was glad to see him. She didn’t like that, didn’t like being invested in a guy she barely knew, especially when the entire world seemed to be coming down on them like a storm.

Her parents would never approve, and everyone had the same opinion - he was dangerous. But he didn’tseemdangerous. He barely knew what the void was, and he definitely couldn’t use it. He was just a normal person. She trusted her instincts, and she didn’t think he was the monster everyone said he was.

Nick glanced at her and found her watching him, and she blushed. He smiled, and she had to look away from the deep blue in his eyes.

“I want to go there,” he said, standing up.

She tried not to notice the way his t-shirt fell against his chest when he stood, but she didn’t do a good job. “Go where?”

“To the coven. Your witches, whatever you call them.”

“What? No, Nick, we already talked about this.”

“The vampires are a bigger threat to my family than your coven.”

“Don’t be so sure,” she said. “Don’t underestimate them. The coven is powerful, especially the elders.”
