“Most of the stories end with the witch being dead, so I’d probably say they’re being killed.”

“Oh,” he said.

“Yeah.”

“I should definitely be sitting down, then,” Nick said.

A few minutes later, he was starting to get his head around it.

Some of it.

Well, not much of it, if he was being honest with himself, but it was better than nothing.

“So I’m... different. You’re a witch, and you have magic, and somehow, I took it from you.”

“Yes.”

“And I’ve had this my whole life, but I never knew about it.”

“As far as I know, yes,” she said. “It was dormant, and it activated when you were exposed to magic.”

“Lucky me.”

“Nobody ever told you anything strange, anything that seemed impossible? Like a fairytale, or some far-fetched children’s story, or maybe a funny story about a weird uncle who claimed to have crazy abilities?”

“Not that I remember.”

She shook her head. “I’m surprised your family didn’t mention it, especially when you got older.”

Nick paused. “Does it run in families?”

“Probably. Honestly, I can’t say for sure, but it makes sense. It can’t be completely random. Witch power is passed down through blood. It could be the same thing. I always assumed it was, but I might be wrong.”

“So you’ve known your whole life about magic.”

She nodded. “I can only speak for witches, but we usually tell children when they’re old enough to understand. I was barely a teenager when my parents told me. I can’t imagine what was going through your parents’ heads when they chose to keep it from you. No offence.”

“It’s okay,” he said. “Maybe they didn’t know. Or they had their reasons.”

“Or I’m completely wrong, and it doesn’t run in families,” Cara said.

“No, it sounds right,” Nick said.

“It could act like a recessive gene and skip generations,” Cara said.

Nick nodded. “I need to talk to my brother, find out if he’s ever noticed anything like this.”

“And there was no one else?” she asked. “Grandparents, cousins, anyone?”

“My family moved around a lot when I was younger,” he said. “Travelling for work, that kind of thing. I don’t think I have any extended family, but if I do, I’ve never met them.”

“And your parents?”

“What, did they have magic?”

“Well, it’s more like the absence of magic. Like a black hole for everything supernatural. A void.”
